If you are still working on your gtx 295s, I had a problem with overheating on a dual pcb evga 295. Blowing it out with compressed air did not help. Took it completely apart to see that the air intake - where the fan blows air into the shrowded cooling fins - were blocked with what looked like carpet! Almost all of the vents were completely closed. It took a toothbrush to scrub it off, then Clorox Cleanup and hot water to remove stuff that looked baked onto the fins. Waiting for 12g tube of Artic Silver 5 from NewEgg to complete the re-assembly and see if it works. Question - are your broken GTX 295s for sale?

If I knew that all 3 were worth saving, sure, otherwise I'd just toss them, 2 of them are the rev2 type with the big central fan and the other 1 is the rev1 295 with the D shaped opening. One's an OEM, One's an EVGA and the rev1 is a BFG, the BFG last I looked had one gpu that still showed up in Device Manager @ about 104C while doing S@H and that was just before I removed it from the PC. The OEM and the EVGA I know how to take a part as I've done that a few times, all the way down to the circuit board itself in fact, I'd have done one by now, but I've been doing other things.

Did you remove the fan and look at the fins that the fan blows air into?

On the r1 BFG? No, I'd only removed the metal cover and tried to blow air through the fins, now the canned air is empty.

The other two being r2 one only has to look at the fins just past the central fan.

The r2 cards only have a little bit of hair, some dust, more on the EVGA then on the OEM, but then their both superclocked cards. Pic of the two r2 fans below.

Just be very carefull that your 3 in 1 oil hasnt been standing on the shelf in the cupboard for a few years..

Got mine out a couple of weeks ago, needed to oil up a damascus blade I'd just aquired.. Damm 3 in 1 was like treacle.. It had been sitting there for about a decade I think:-)

Almost as bad as trying to use WD40 on a lock, guarenteed to ensure the addatives will clog up the works.

Cheers,

Cheers,

Oil? The fans do work, at least when the cards were in a pc.

I get through a lot of oil,
also used on fishing reel`s and all manner of things a tin only lasts two or three years so is `fresh`
I did once (and only once) try some 20w50 engine oil in a fan, and it did slow it down a bit . . . .

I have the dual card model where you can not see the metal cooling fins until you take the card apart. The card was overheating. I took the card apart, cleaned an amazing amount of stuff off the fins (I bought the card used and suspect that the former owner was a smoker) and reassembled it. Now the card does not work. The top indicator is green, but there is only a black screen on the monitor. It was fun taking it apart and putting it back together, but what a waste!

You won't believe this, but of the 3 GTX295 cards that stopped working on Me, I sold 2 of them for $40 each plus shipping. 2 down and 1 to go and yep I said their as is and not guaranteed to work.

Well I got the EVGA GTX460 2WIN card today, but since It needs 300w or 2 - 8pin pci-e connectors filled, I have to wait for the adapter I bought to arrive, in the meantime the fan shroud is loose and yep has one screw missing, so I'll have to tighten that down, but It looks ok otherwise, photo or not.

Well I got the card, problem is the seller sent the card with one screw missing and another in the wrong hole, which meant the fan shroud is loose, I contacted EVGA, got nowhere, seems they won't replace screws if one buys their cards on ebay, as they view ebay as a voided warranty(used or new), so since EVGA screws are out, I may have no choice but to buy a 4-40 drill and tap as that size is just a little bit bigger and will only set Me back $6.86 as I have more than a few 4-40 screws laying around. The 3 screws are all the same type like the one that connects the bracket on the back to the card(look for a hole with no screw, wish I'd kept some of those 295 screws, one would work for sure), that type of screw. All for an EVGA GTX460 2WIN card...

Ignore the 4 gpu screws around each gpu, it's the two screws around the the edge of the card, and the one on the far right below that has no screw, all use the same thread of course.

at least Bro, do you know if only this card is working ?

No, as I don't have a 6-8pin pci-e adapter cable yet like the one below to tell if it works or not, it's in the mail and is coming from Taiwan, so I have to wait until next week...

The 3 screws might be M2 or M3 x 6mm of course, naturally no one carries metric here. Screw size is undetermined as EVGA couldn't tell Me what size screw they used on this danged card, the guy just didn't know...

When I get the adapter cable I'll just risk it and use the card as I have it now, with the 2 screws holding down one end as that seems to be as tight as I can get the card to be.

I want to be able to clean the fans and the heatsink so loctite is a no-no... Is M3 small enough or would an M4 be better? I was thinking the length should be 5mm though. Oh and the mail had no cable, nor My MSI GTX460 Cyclone card yet.

Quick fix: use a piece of wire, straightened paper clip, or tie wrap through the hole and twist it tight; or a plastic zip-tie if you have one small enough, and clip off the excess.

That would work normally, but not here, the fan shroud which acts as a partial heatsink and fan mount looks like a zip tie might work, but where would I attach it? As there's a post in the way of the only available hole in the card.

Ah I see what you mean, I thought it was a through hole, I guess you can't feed something through the screw hole.
