Message 1195591 - Posted: 15 Feb 2012, 14:13:44 UTC

Gpus on 2 cards disappeared from Windows 7 x64(not even in device manager anymore when they were in the PC) after working at or near 104C in Win7 x64, the fan was at 100% while doing S@H, temps were much lower, no can't remember how low exactly, but below 75C when idle, these are a pair of GTX295 single pcb cards and ever since, both are superclocked cards(a black label and an EVGA coop). On the EVGA before It finally quit(the Leds on both cards were both Green still), I was having driver crashes in Windows(driver version didn't make any difference), now with them gone I have no problems, dummy plugs and all...

So anyone run into this and revive a card by installing new thermal paste on the gpus(AS5 is what I have) and making sure the heatsinks and fan are cleaned of any dust(if any)?

Or are all 4 gpus dead as door nails?

You might have been able to save them if you had done this when you first noticed the temps, but now that they stopped responding they are probably toast.

Well they gave no warning outside of the temps and driver crashes, which at the time I thought was due to the dummy plugs I'd attached, cause when I removed the plugs the errors stopped, yet on My two remaining cards, no driver crashes and the plugs are attached, sigh. Paper weights, crap, well I can always try and put new AS5 on the gpus and if needed some new pads on the EVGA at least(maybe the OEM too, if the 1st is then of the undead, LOL) as I know what to do as I've done this before when converting a card to water and see if there is even a pulse or if I have a pair of corpses...

So sorry to hear :(

They were both superclocked by their makers, I may have to tear a part all My future cards that I buy from now on to install a proper amount of AS5 compound on the gpus(s), the stock clocked ones don't have that problem on air, at least not yet.

The paste could have dried up I have cleaned and applied the paste before to one of my cards. Can't you rma the cards?

Well lets see on the OEM, I have no idea on who made it really, supposedly it was an EVGA, but the fan shroud doesn't say so and yeah the other is an EVGA, but since I'm not the original owner, I don't think that would help Me any, from what I've read if the gpus go beyond a certain temp they just shut down to protect themselves, but I could be wrong on that. I could try to fix one and see, not much else I could do. So on the rma I'd say no.

Unfortunately, EVGA wont warranty the cards if you arent the original owner....

The frequent crashes should have been the trigger that alerted you to the possibility of video card problems. Outside of crappy drivers, high temperatures are usually the cause of these crashes.

Have you tried booting these cards up from another computer (for just a few seconds) to determine if they are really dead?

If they dont come up then they are very dead and not worth reviving.

No other computer exists here, I'd thought of putting them up for sale as spare parts. I might though give one of them 1 one chance, just for curiosity, clean out any final dust and change the the thermal compound to AS5 on the gpus and the nf200 chip, if nothing happens then it's no loss as it won't cost Me any money to do so, just time and a little effort, which isn't all that much to do really, if it comes up then try on the 2nd as I'd read that the gpus just shut down over a certain temp to protect themselves.

If the cards won't boot up with both GPUs cold, changing the HS compound and cleaning them is not gonna do any good, as they have not even come up to temp at that point.

Only other outside chance of saving them is the infamous oven trick, stripping them down and baking the circuit boards in an effort to reflow the solder. This has met with mixed success....there are numerous posts and youtube clips on the subject.

Then I'll just just put the two up for sale as parts, after taking a pic or two...

Well, Vic.....
I don't think there is much of a market for half burned out GTX295s.
But, go for it. :)

Mainly for the fans and heatsinks as those still work.

I'm looking at getting out of the G200 series altogether, so I'll be selling off the 3 remaining blocks and eventually the last two working cards, an MSI v1 285 and a BFG v2 295, which are running in the mid 70's right now doing Seti..

But before I get rid of those 2 cards, I need to secure their replacement, I'm looking at a PNY GTX460 and an EVGA GTX460 2Win.

I have had to use VGA splittera on all of my rigs to get past the Hawking 8 port KVMA I use to access all my rigs. Otherwise the drivers would never load. Don't know if the situation has ever changed with never drivers. NV never did come up with a work around other than mine when fighting with this.

I got this from Aquatuning.us on My request for a water block for the EVGA GTX460 2win card, I doubt EK will ever make a block for the 2win card, aquacomputer might(their forum), if there is enough interest as I think they do all their design and manufacturing in house.

Hi,
Please feel free to contact EK or Aquacomputer directly on this subject if
there is enough demand im sure they can help.

Best Regards,
