Problem is the phone makers can prohibit programs like Boinc from operating on their phones by keeping them out of their approved app store. In any case I'll believe it is possible to do when I see it done for more than 12 hours at a time on a cell phone battery with a single charge. And these phones already eat a batteries charge quickly now, I keep an extra battery all charged up on standby on My desk for just that reason.

But compare to other techs only smartphones have fastest tech advancement in the last few years and seriously evolving into pocket computer rather than a phone.

Like pc hacking accelerated os and pc development so will be smartphones.

Soon both desktops and servers will get ARM-based chips. Microsoft has already promised an ARM version of Windows8. Having used a RISC-based microcomputer in my professional career, a MIPS/Bull R6000 I know the advantage of RISC CPUs over x86 CPUs.

Didnt Verizon last year stop new customers from getting unlimited Data plans?

The day will come when those phone comapanys close the door to all customers that have unlimited plans. They see the big cash cow that a smart phone is. Guys where I work constantly cruise the the internet from there phone.

How many parents have had the fun of a teenager racking up a big bill just for texting.

Some people on here think that a smart phone is totally wireless. It is not. its only wireless to the nearest wifi or cell tower. From there it goes through wires.

I pretty sure that when everyone is smartphoned and the lines are always buggy plus getting that huge monthly bill, Most folks will forget the half APPed doodads on the things and just use them as regular stinking phones again.

Anyone knows about an app with the name of Echelon?

If so, it should come to your PC as a hidden disguise.

It's a HTC Desire (the non-HD version). Too unstable to be useful yet, but hey it's a proof of concept anyways.

Have a look in the BOINC Wiki for more crazy phone stuff...

For those who don't like to read, here's the boiled down version:

  • It is slow, SLOW
  • Heat is not much of an issue (wrt overheating)
  • Battery on a day-to-day basis is not an issue
  • Long term there may be some detrimental effects on battery
  • It is possible to go a factor of around 10 faster than this on the same hardware

all 3 WU's failed with result overflow. Nice try. Thank You come again.

The one wingman that has returned results didn't match yours. I'm willing to bet you are going to get "0" credit for your efforts

Nice try. Thank You come again.

Nice attitude btw...

These aren't the only results returned by the phone (it does have credit for some earlier runs). The most recent workunits are experiments with a newer version of libfftw3 that supports the GPU on the phone. It seems the old WUs are no longer in the list.
Interestingly enough, the new code seems to pick up more tripplets and pulses than regular clients - so it's basically the same stuff + some more.
You should, however, be able to get an idea of the WU runtime compared to a normal client with this.
