In 2011 alone there are 490 million new smartphones being sold. So isn't it time for Boinc to invade into this new territory and recruit new army?!

Now smartphones have 1-1.5ghz dual core cpu even newer versions coming with quad core cpu and upto 2gb ram.

Is current dual core smartphones comparable to Pentuim 3 or P4 in crunching powers?

Since thousands of people using netbooks in boinc world smartphone is undeniable lost power source for DC world.

And I am guessing in the near future 8 core cpu smartphones are coming so that means serious computing power coming in tens of millions.

===============

And there is one basic condition that where ever phone is close to power cord source in home or office or car an owner can connect to power and begin crunching Boinc.

===============

A wake up call figure: ;)

The power consumption to crunch will require that you leave your phone home and plugged in, so I doubt many people will want to do that.

Out of 500 million smartphone owners there are at least 1-10 million of them will crunch Boinc what ever the reason or barrier is.

So for 5 million smartphone crunching power would it be .5-2 terraflop or something?! just wild guess...

There is another ease which Boinc is linux what I am guessing and android is linux, which means things are halfway done:

Maybe around 300 million future crunchers are already OS ready.

As far as BOINC goes, things are far more than halfway done, see http://boincoid.sourceforge.net/. They even did a port of S@H Enhanced which wasn't really practical ~3 years ago but may be now.

Wow this is a great kick start situation!

Maybe worldwide probable 10 million new boinc members possibly waiting for this app right at this moment considering more than 50 million dual core cpu phones are operating now. Plus those millions of tablets with dual core cpu running android.

There is a BOINC manager for Android which has been around for a while. I believe some people are also working on a full port to both the Android based devices and for the iPad. Even if one doesn't use the device for serious crunching they could be used for non-compute intensive tasks. We'll have to see what comes out.

Although there is power in numbers, as the whole Boinc concept proves, I doubt that smartphones shall ever contribute much due to their primary function and the inherent limitations of a battery powered device.

I don’t think that they are on par with the Intel and AMD chips that are in the typical cruncher uses or in even laptops I don’t think they are powerful enough to crunch for any sort of rac.

It is clear that when mobile cpu's enter 22nm or 15nm areas battery powered processing game will enter whole new level. Even from 32nm-ish period the laptops today totally different battery powered tool than a few years ago.

It is not matter if but when someone might post smartphone crunching on youtube. Since Android doesn't limit individual innovations like Apple or Microsoft do.

Regardless of their computing power, they are purchased to use as a portable device, and almost nobody will be willing to keep them constantly plugged into a charger to keep them powered for Seti crunching.

UNLESS, they were to be so powerful as to be a cost effective investment VS a desktop with GPUs to buy and leave at home on the charger just to crunch.

Doubtful.

Yep, Ashes to Ashes, as who'd want to tether such a smokin device for long? ;)

Ashes get it? Sorry I couldn't help Myself...

Off course there will be religious hard liners will oppose any new approaches. ;)

I am wondering in the near future total smartphone terraflop power might exceed total desktop power or at least get closer something.

I can see the day when instead of banks of servers being replaced by banks of smart phones powering all the data for the whole world I mean come on now be real. I mean smart phones running bank of America servers yeah really they are so powerful.

I would leave my phone plugged in while home, AND dedicate any old phones after an upgrade (every 2 yrs or so) to crunching just like I do my otherwise outdated PC's. Rick

As long as they keep making desktops, There is no way in heck that a smart phone will ever be more powerfull.

I dont think that Seti@home will ever put smart phones in the closet to replace Oscar or Carolyn.

Meanwhile at Barcelona Supercomputing Center mighty spaniards managed to build a Greenest supercomputer with quad-core ARM cpu's.

Whatever Desktop religious hard linership run strong smartphone crunching is imminent.

... "The prototype server is designed to handle complex workloads and will incorporate Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 3 chips, which were introduced earlier this month for smartphones and tablets. The 1,000 Tegra 3 chips have ARM CPUs and are being paired with discrete graphics processors from Nvidia to speed up scientific and math calculations.

The server could provide inroads for ARM to enter the high-performance computing market, which is dominated by competitors including Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, IBM and Oracle. Today, ARM processors are found in most smartphones and tablets, but have virtually no server market presence.

However, there is a growing interest in using the ARM processors in servers that can deliver high performance while overcoming power constraints, said Steve Scott chief technology officer of the Tesla business unit at Nvidia." ...

Look a green crunching has already begun. 3 months ago!

Seeing how you removed your hot link to that site, I have pasted it here.ARM

The points I found interesting are these.

The Tegra 3 prototype supercomputer won't deliver petaflops of peak performance like some of the fastest computers in the world, Scott said. But the server could make the Green500 list, which measures the most energy efficient supercomputers in the world

And, Nvidia is developing a new ARM-based CPU code-named Project Denver, which will go into smartphones, tablets, PCs and supercomputers. It's possible that Nvidia will integrate ARM cores in Tesla products in the long run, Scott said.

"We'll look at it and integrate it when time is right," Scott said.

ARM recently also announced a new 64-bit architecture, which includes many server-specific features. That will get rid of a key roadblock for ARM to make its presence felt in the HPC market.

"To do it right you need to use 64-bit architecture," Scott said.

So like I said it will never be as powerfull as a desktop as long as they make desktops.

Im not anti smart phone. I wish I had one. But it will never replace my desk top PC.
