Ah that's 2 numpty's gone...... Well, my earlier post say much about this.. Now Salmon wants the SNP to overturn it's traditional anti-Nato stance... Seems like two MSP's agreed with me too, here. They must be reading our threads up there in Scotland? Hmmn, looks like the Jocks have mislayed their paperwork.... Law officers approved documents hmmn, it seems the EU has got it wrong then when they stated that an independent new sovereign state would require a formal application to join. Hey Alex, you've been at the Johnny Walker's again! |

I don't see what they would gain by being "independent" It's still one relatively small island containing three states (sort of). Would Scotland form it's own Army, Navy and Air Force? Would it go out and seek alliances and form treaties with other nations? Would they close their borders with England and require Visas and passports? Would they increase taxes on their citizens to pay for having their own independent government? To me Scotland is to Great Britain as Puerto Rico is to the United States in some ways. Puerto Rico gets the benefit of protection from the USA but they are virtually an independent nation. Scotland is regarded world wide as an entity unto itself culturaly but has the benefit of the security afforded by being part of the United Kingdom. An independent Scotland would only benefit those who manage to become the leaders and no one else. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

I think that's their objective, more devolved power ... It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

I think that's their objective, more devolved power ... Most probably is their reason too. Yet to be given more powers, above and beyond those of Northern Ireland, Wales and England, should mean that Scotland should have less say in these other countries affairs. If not, Scotland could end up in a position of autonomy to such an extent that it could become the ruling country of the whole of the UK if it's powers at Westminster are not appropriately curbed....food for thought. I agree Scotland could have total devolved powers (tax raising, etc) and still remain in the Union. If they did, then the transfer of the Westminster block grant would either finish or be reduced almost totally. That is except for an interim time when the Tax raising powers kick in and they get the tax money in. For additional devolved powers the elections to Westminster would remain, and Scottish MPs could vote. But, for votes which only affect England all the Scottish MPs should be banned from a vote. Any found to have voted will be suspended for 2 months. The exceptions to devolved power would be interest rates, the armed forces, and foreign policy - just like now. Hey Alex, you're not depending on this to enhance your Independence claim are you, or hoping that it'll do for Scotland what the Olympics did for Britain? If you are, got bad news for you...it won't work! glasgow games 2014 |

So you're endorsing their independance then..... ..oh well, soon england will be a piddling little country surrounded by nations that don't like them. |

So you're endorsing their independance then..... The Welsh don't mind us, Sirius. The Welsh assembly are looking at over 100,000 English commuting into Wales to work if Wales was to gain independence. They want this lot over because of the skills they have. So it seems to me that the Welsh will be looking at least for a working love affair. I'm looking forward to it happening! Too many ingerlanders moan & castigate those who show the country's dirty linen in public rather than go out of their way to prevent it happening in the 1st place. you are the most prolific of them! I'm here to stay along with the other 5 million foreigners.... ...won't be long now... You cannot see what that had to do with an independentScotland? It was in reply to your crass comments about the games....you created an Olympic thread so should have followed suit on the Commonwealth Games rather than invest this thread with your trivia. |

The Welsh assembly could increase its powers in the future and may one day evolve into a body similar to the Scottish Parliament. 28 million tourists visited England alone in year 2011, must like us a lot. The total for the whole of the UK that year was 31 million a ratio of 10 to 1. So 9 out of every 10 people in the world prefer the English to either the Welsh or the Scottish. So who cares if 12 million Welsh & Scott's don't like us, going by the tourism ratio above, it seems that 6.5 billion people in this world don't like either of you two....better start making friends, I'd say. FYI for all Jocks.... Er? got anything to do with 'just being in-bedded in their gene structure'? If Wales was to gain independence then no doubt Brussels will carry out a study of, 'Why do most Welsh men have such great singing voices'. Eire, wonder if Brussels has yet thought about a study on Irish dietary habits, 'Why do the Irish eat so many spuds' England, 'Why do so many English girls dye their hair blond' UK, 'Why do they not want to be part of the ECM'..or have they done this one already but refuse to publish it's findings?
