Skildude - would you like to start a new thread about the history of Ireland and its relations with the British? I think that it might be helpful as this one is all about Scotland. Nah I like this one. Besides, If we had the technology back then as we do now the Brits would have been beaten down in the court of Public opinion. Sadly the US was to busy exterminating its native American tribes to be bothered with what they considered inferior(Irish) people In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. I personally think that the SNP wants a Scotland independant of Westminister so that the UK will only consist of England & Wales, for the simple fact that Cronie B-lair's last act before leaving no 10 was to give Ireland back to the Irish. To add insult to injury, this event is to occur Easter 2016....that fact alone is one of the greatest insults a brit has given a Paddy! Whether Dublin & Stormant can work together (which is the intention) remains to be seen. Should Scotland succeed, Wales may throw their 2 cents in, in which case, where will England & the UK stand? |

After all the four entities that make up Great Britain I'm sorry, I thought Wales was pressing for independence too. My bad Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Should Scotland succeed, Wales may throw their 2 cents in, in which case, where will England & the UK stand? I don't actually see any of this happening. If either Wales or Scotland think that the world is going to change for the good by having independence then I think that they need a good dose of serious common sense. I would fully expect that they would find their world would implode around them. Promises made to them, to get them to vote for independence, not to materialise then to cover their guilt political campaigns raised to blame the English for their sorry plights. Also, do remember that the Scots originate from Ireland and the majority of the Welsh from Middle and West England. Think about the Irish potato famine. The brits basically ignored the Irish and allowed them to simply starve as a people. Unforgivable is not a strong enough word. Skildude, you need to re-read your history again regarding the Irish potato famine. You missed out what the Irish landowners and gentry did during this time...packed their bags and made a bee-line for England. The Irish landowners also would not permit the starving Irish to farm the land, to feed themselves, land that these landowners had spare and available for farming. The Irish had to try and survive on their existing paltry sized bits of land that because of this famine were not large enough to grow alternative types of crops on. In the end the whole lot of it above is all old history, and those who dwell on the past never make sound foundations to build on to make themselves a solid future. So here's to the future, what ever the past may have done, the guilty are long dead and buried so we can't bring them back to face justice. One thing that the politicians have missed is geography. Regardless of what may or will happen, England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland will always be known as the British Isles & I can't see that ever been changed (nor should it be). |

At one timeline point british soldiers burnt down white house in Washington so any americans feel anything independence from britan is unconditionally right. But with current shaky EU atmosphere it is highly questionable to change own political and economic position unless there is very stable EU evolving cycle occurs. But mostly outsiders have no clue what good development advantages scots possess currently. Mandtugai! |

Well we all know (at least here in the UK) that most Jocks,Paddy's,Taffy's & Georgie's love a pint or two.... ....That's the spirit, Sirius.....Expand on it and have Eire join too. Could also have our own President just to make sure all are getting their fair share from the economic cake. If that ever happened, I don't think he'd live long if he ever stepped into Ireland....but he'd still go down in history.... ____________ Ah, but what be if the first President was Irish and happened to also own all the beer in the UK? If that ever happened, I don't think he'd live long if he ever stepped into Ireland....but he'd still go down in history.... Ah, that'll be ok then as long as he kept the cost of the beer reasonable.... But it looks like I made a mistake...I automatically thought John was referring to Cronie B-lair....... |

Personally, I can't understand their reasoning. With all the closures of RN & RAF bases in Scotland & with North Sea reserves dwindling, what's left that will enable them to compete with the rest of the UK & indeed, Europe? I don't think Whiskey exports will keep them going. |

Of course this has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with it right ? When you read some of the blurb the Scottish SNP come out with you realise their living in a dream world. With all the closures of RN & RAF bases in Scotland & with North Sea reserves dwindling, what's left that will enable them to compete with the rest of the UK & indeed, Europe? They don't have a diverse enough industry to survive and mix-it with the rest of the world. Scotland will rely on the rest of the UK in supplying jobs for them south of the boarder. The biggest risk to Scottish independence causing strife to Scotland itself would be if the rest of the UK was to up-sticks and leave the ECM.
