This not strictly education but does contain one interesting paragraph relating to education.

Social mobility report: Work 'may be no route out of poverty'

Mr Milburn, (A one-time Labour minister, who headed the report) who stood down as an MP at the last election, will also advocate a scheme for pairing bright children and the best teachers in an effort to raise attainment.

Now if that is taken to it's obvious conclusion, would lead back to the grammar/high school system.

After seeing this report, I think education is not just down to Parents but the establishment itself. Just what are they teaching on Journalism Degrees?

Famous JFK photo to be sold

November 15th a week after the photo is 50 years old?

Unless I'm living in a parallel universe where things are slightly different, wasn't JFK assassinated on November 22nd?

Hmmn, could be a physic camera......

On November 15, one week after the famous photograph turns 50, it will go for up for sale at Cincinnati's Cowan's Auctions and is expected to fetch somewhere between $50,000 and $75,000.

It should read one week before .... It's the Mail, what do you expect? Accuracy? The truth?

As a matter of fact yes. The same applies to your favourite website the BBC. They don't care though, not really when they know they can get a £150,000 handshake.

Teachers' unions fight bill that would bar sex offenders from schools
A bipartisan bill that would stop convicted sex offenders from working in schools has been passed by the House but is running into a foe as it heads to the Senate: major teachers' unions like the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers.

“We should have zero tolerance for issues like this,” Olson said. “We have zero tolerance policies for weapons, a kid who bites a Pop Tart into a gun or has a Hello Kitty bubble-maker will be suspended or expelled if they have those sorts of things…”
What if i make a trebuchet from a plastic ruler? (I.e. flick something...) can i be expelled for that?
Ludicrous!

Probably persecuted for possession of a weapon on school grounds, 10 to 20.

Somebody hit me & hard! Am I reading this report correctly?

Man admits war memorial damage

"Colleen Gildernew, defending Smith, said: "He had no idea that the war memorial was a war memorial."

"Smith, who has 44 previous convictions, had applied for a job in the Army but was not selected "because of his convictions as a young boy"."

The unemployed 21-year-old admitted causing criminal damage at Westminster Magistrates' Court. Smith, who has 44 previous convictions, had applied for a job in the Army but was not selected "because of his convictions as a young boy". The 21-year-old had planned on going to Fusilier Rigby's funeral but was unable to attend as he was arrested.

21 years old and 44 previous? Needs to be locked up for a long time.

Maybe but what got me was it has the word 'memorial' engraved on it. Secondly, most guys I knew that entered the forces were aware of why they wanted to join as well as knew some military history.

He wanted to join the army?

Take that along with his age and number of convictions tells me a lot more that was not mentioned in that report.

Corrected for spelling.

Another report that beggars belief

Just what is the problem with those in charge? Nothing else to do and they're bored so come up with stupid ideas?

What I've tried to teach my kids is the things that 1 wouldn't learn at school.

It seems to have worked with them the same way as it did with me (just don't hand any 1 of them a tool, it's scary), but without anywhere near the degree of "punishment" involved that I went through.

I do get very embarrassed though when people just comment on how well behaved and mannered they are (and it happens more often than I feel comfortable with actually).

1 daughter starts uni next year while my other daughter and my youngest son start the year after (just a shame about gap years and business qualifications). :-)

So in the end I reckon you can only try and guide them, but do be proud of your kids' achievements and what they make of themselves (also be there when they need advise or help).

In the end, I believe that every parent should be able to fill in the gaps and set the framing with their kid/s education and let the system take care of the rest.

The rest in the end, is really up to them. ;-)

Cheers.

OECD Pisa tests

I got all the maths questions right by using simple mental arithmetic. As it was aimed at 15 year olds, I would rather have expected to! But I tell you what, I know some adults that would probably get way more than half wrong. Yes I know some sad people ....

Oh dear. Frankly anyone who scores anything under half on that test should have their right to vote removed, be sterilised and probably be harvested for organs.

Too much? I just don't like stupid people. I'd stick by the first point, the second might be debateable. The third would be decided by interview.

Certainly anyone who scores less than 6 in the example above is someone i have no desire to meet or socialise with.

And wow, spanking your child like that is just sick.
