So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish. Due to ever increasing power bills (hit $700 last quarter) and the ongoing price gouging by the power companies (with the requisite lack of concern by the government) I'm forgoing crunching. It's been a great 10 years of watching SETI@home grow and BOINC develop into the multi-project platform that it is. Good luck to the SETI@home staff and crunchers. I hope you find it. Live long and crunch. Paul. |

Paul, I am sorry to hear your plans to leave. I cut back when my power bill topped $1,700. Might I suggest that you simple use Boinc the way it was intended. Just let it run in the background when you have your computer on anyway. That way you can still contribute and post but your power bill will not be negatively impacted. Just a thought, hate to see you go all the way. Carlos |

Why not just cut back??? This doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing situation... |

Sorry to see you go. Hope you look into just running one computer at spare cycles just to stay in the game. I know about renegade power companies, We have National Grid. Or as we call it, National Greed. [/quote] Old James |

Sorry to hear Yer going Paul, I faced a similar problem at one time, by shutting down the older PCs I had then and eventually upgrading to a newer hand built pc, My power bill went down. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I never had a power bill that high, but I now only run the three fastest boxes that I have. Like I always say: “Better a drop than a drip of anything.†Even one work unite could be the gosh one. |

Hi guys, Thanks for the comments. I'll see how the power bill goes. Currently the computers are still on (for other reasons), just not crunching and with summer upon us the extra heat also meant the air con was being utilised more than it really should have been as well. So a double wammy. I'll see how the power bill goes over this quarter to see if CPU only crunching my be a fall back plan. The next project is to consolidate the info that is across 2 computers onto just one and then minimise its power consumption while shutting off the older one. I'll be doing a few SETI wu's every now and then to maintain a min posting RAC. Regards to all, Paul. |

Cool beans.......... You don't have to be a major contributor to Seti just to say you have done your part. Kill off the GPUs, and just let the CPUs crunch......whatever. I would be nice to have you stick around, without any total disconnect. You can do just a little.........it is enough, my friend. It all adds up. Your call.
