Hi community,

do you know openoffice.org?

You have experiences with this software?
Good or bad..?
It's safe or you get additional virus/trojan or whatever with it?

It works like M$ Office?

Thanks.

I use it from time to time and recommend it highly. It works very much like MS Office and it's FREE!!! In fact, don't remember why I use office. Have to rethink that one.

The latest version of OpenOffice are excellent pieces of software that work as a direct replacement of Microsoft Office products. If you're looking to save some cash like my former employer was, OpenOffice will fit the bill (pun intended) in most cases. Note that some people seem to prefer the software that branched off of OpenOffice: LibreOffice.

...and no, I've never gotten a virus from using OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

It works. Well, 99.9% of the time. I have had issues getting Office to read OpenOffice docs. Might have been the same issues that plague different versions of Office reading each others files though.

I love Open Office. I had considered getting MS Office to organize my tiny (but growing!) business empire but a friend talked me into trying Open Office and I never looked back.

Never even heard of anyone ever having issues with any sort of viruses or the like. It's backed by Oracle, which has a fairly good pedigree.

And, of course, ya can't beat the price. :)

excellent product. FREE and can save your files in MSoffice file type so you can pass that file to your high dollar friends and they won't know the difference

I started using it just over a year ago after an MSOffice started giving me problems, it's a good replacement. For me it does everything MSOffice does (I've found the output documents as PDFs quite handy) and I certainly can't argue with the price :)

Open Office on my Linux machines, and MS Office on my Windoze machines. There are subtle differences, but nothing too bad as bad as switching between versions of MS Office. I would run OO on everything, but someone else bought me MS for the Windoze machines, so it cost me the same...

At work I use MS Office and at home I use Open Office...I used to use Word Perfect back in the 90's purely because it was better at importing files than MSO. If I had my way, all local authorities would use Open Office. It works. It gets the job done and it is far cheaper! From a personal perspective, I like it and I've not experienced any problems with it...nor have I come across any problem with 'bugs'.

Open Office I've heard is ok. Although Microsoft probably regards Open Office as a virus/trojan, I wouldn't put It past MS at least.

I think you will find that is a bit of an Urban Myth Vic. Office allows you to save and open files in a number of different formats. It is in MS interests to make their programs universally compatible. I'm no great fan of MS, but I accept that they are currently the industry leader in their field.

Actually MS didn't really like clones of It's products using compatible formats for saving files, that was no rumor or urban myth, As It says Here. Besides I said probably Chris S.

Microsoft lost a patent dispute with Toronto-based i4i LP, and has now been ordered to stop selling Microsoft Word in U.S. markets.

The issue concerned the use of "custom XML" in Word in the Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft Office 2007 productivity suites. A final judgment (PDF) issued on Aug. 11 by Leonard Davis, U.S. District Judge for East Texas, found that Microsoft "willfully" infringed on i4i's patent (U.S. Patent No. 5,787,449). A jury had handed down the verdict back in May.

That is a bit of old news.

Open Office is sponsered by Oracle and IBM, just to name the big guns. It has been around for 9 1/2 years now.

Sutaru, I work for a big company with a lot of computers. It was allowed to be installed on a lot of computers.

Yeah the Open Office software is very safe, I've installed It, nothing wrong here, But then I'm not some insane sounding person with initials of MB(Who doesn't post here on Seti@Home, thankfully)...

In my office we used OO with the intention to save some money, but as we rely heavily on advanced spreadsheets functions to do certain jobs we still needed to buy some Office licenses for those specific tasks...

Anyway, it is allways wise to try first the 0 cost option...

Gary, I have it on both my iMac AND my laptop. I noticed that MS Office won't open the OpenOffice files, but OpenOffice does just fine with the MS Office files as well. I'm not 100% sure, but I just think it's MS's loss.
Personally, I like using O.o. as well as MS Office.

I have used it for several years with no problems. Only reason I also use MS office is that my company provide me with a copy. If not it would be OO on all my machines.

Can't be beaten on price!
