Viral Youtube ad for Nissan trucks.

Plane lands on truck

That is so not possible. The landing/stall speed of an L-1011(the plane shown) is about 125 knots or around 140 miles per hour. Nissan's top speed 110 miles per hour, maybe. Nissan payload, 3000 maybe 5,000 pounds to spring failure. L-1011's nose gear load on landing is around 24,000 pounds. The Nissan would never be able to match the plane's speed and it would collapse under the load.

I represented an airline in a some crash cases. One on an aborted take off and two on landings. I deposed the engineers who designed the planes, tires and landing gear. I know way to much about loads, speed, designed failure points, etc.

That commercial bugs the heck out of Eric as well. He tried to explain to me why landing on a truck would be so much worse for everybody aboard than just landing without wheels. I nodded and smiled sweetly because I didn't understand a syllable of his explanation.

Oh my gosh! An ad that is not telling us the truth! I'm suing the suckers. ;o)

The Nissan commercial may have been inspired by this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpx6o4gvmXE

It's Hilarious, but you have to watch all of it, ~3 minutes.

I hate that Nissan commercial with a passion. If you tried to drop the front landing gear into the bed of a pickup truck, the rear tires of the truck would bottom out, the front tires would leave the pavement, the truck would go out of control and take the plane with it. One of the plane's wings would impact the ground, and then the trouble would begin. Should the driver of the truck survive the experience, he would be rapidly be beaten to death by the relatives of the people who didn't survive.

Commercial jets land with partially deployed or undeployed front landing gear all the time. Its not a big deal. You see some sparks, but the main gear brakes and the rudder have more than enough steering power to keep the plane on the runway and upright. Do a GoodSearch on "jet lands without front gear" for some examples.

Too much explanation. Try pickup weight rating 1000 pounds. Airplane weight 900000 pounds. Result squashed pickup.

I just start with the idea it's A COMMERCIAL! Therefore, it is 99.9% BS from the start.

Oh sure, the product name and manufacturer may be truthfully presented, but after that, it's all just a snake-oil pitch.

No angst, no worries...
