Message 1153479 - Posted: 18 Sep 2011, 8:14:30 UTC - in response to Message 1153477.

Thanks guys, I bit the bullet and went back to windows and it appears the GPU is still not working. Ozz, perhaps i picked you up wrong but i was really asking how i should get around the problem.

I was far enough ahead to note that i was using stock aps and linux to which i am aware is an unsupported combination. But my real point is that other people have gotten around it.

Perhaps my question was aimed at the wrong audience. My apologies, particuarly to Ozz.

OK....you're back to Windows...alas, Vista is not one of their best, but........
Shut down Boinc and restart.

Post the first part of the startup messages so we can see what it tells us.
Then maybe we can get ya running and maybe even optimize ya.

'He' has a handle to his Jug Claggy and this question was more specific to the card and not to the theory behind GPU crunching.

If your going to jump on peoples threads with pointless observations i.e which threads i have posted on before, then think about it before doing so. Clearly 'I' posted the thread and 'I' wasnt happy enough with the original answer.

My second post was more specific to try and get an answer from one of these GPU gurus running Linux. As someone suggested in my first post.

So to wrap up. If you have nothing useful to say Claggy, dont say anything

I don't have any experience with that, as I am running 6.10.58 on everything here. I know things have been rearranged a bit in newer versions. Which some folks are not too fond of...LOL.
So I don't know how to tell you to proceed posting the Boinc messages.
Somebody else will have to chime in.

Looks OK so far...
Boinc sees your GPU and you have a good driver installed.
You don't have any GPU work downloaded yet.
It's a little hit and miss to come by right now.
Do your work requests say 'requesting work for CPU and GPU'?

My last post was made whilst you posted this one.
That may be a showstopper.
Your Boinc messages show 244MB available VS the 254MB Seti wants.

Small difference, but I don't know how to get around it.

Try downloading GPU-Z and see what it says about the memory on the card.

LOL...I know the feeling.

Might be some way to change settings in Vista to free up some of that memory, but I have never had the problem or run Vista.
Maybe try some lower resolution monitor settings or something.
Maybe a bios setting.
Perhaps somebody else will have some other suggestions or know more than I do about it.

wait,

Am i being really dumb here. Should i be using the inbuilt graphics to run my monitor leaving the graphics card free?

You could try it, but I think it depends a lot on the mobo and bios.
I believe some folks have had trouble trying to get Boinc to recognize and crunch on the offboard GPU when enabling the onboard.
Again, I have no experience with this, as I never had a mobo with onboard graphics.

Well, my friend....it's 4AM here, and I am getting rather squinty-eyed.

Good luck with it until the morrow. Must be off to sleep with the kitties.

You could try that, but you might need to mess with the BIOS settings. Most motherboards disable onboard graphics when a graphics card is installed.

If your GPU doesn't report enough Memory for the Server to send you one of the Stock Cuda apps you can try to lower the resolution, i doubt that will help, turning off Vista's Aero effects should help a bit,

The Best way is to run Anonymous platform instead, this Bypasses the Server memory requirement, I used it to prove Collatz's Cuda app will run on a 128MB 8400M GS, then got them to lower the Server's memory requirement,
as long as you have more than 220Mb available the Stock Seti Cuda 6.08 app will run, here's a suitable app_info.xml for the Stock apps,
make sure you use use Notepad to make it, and save it with ANSI encoding:

Hi Ricky
To help get this thread back on track.
For Windows
For early series cards (i.e. Non-Fermi) Nvidia driver V191.07 combined with the V6.09 Standard SAH app has proved to be the fastest combination for crunching and the most memory efficient although V275.xx plus the Lunatics 38g app is starting to give the older drivers a run for their money. Both the above apps are faster than the current "stock" GPU app and the Lunatics AK_v8 CPU app is way faster than stock for both Windows and Linux.

For Linux
You never came back with the info as to whether you're running a 32 bit or 64 bit system so please note.
The 32 bit Linux GPU app is broken and has been withdrawn. If you have a copy of this app, do not use it as it produces nothing but errors.

For 64 bit, there is this app from Arkayn's site. It's written by arronhaviland. There are still a few bugs (e.g. Support for multiple GPU's is broken), but it works well with crunching times not too far behind the Lunatics Windows app. You will have to adjust the "Niceness" of the program to get reasonable crunching times times out of it though. The default setting is way to low. See this thread for more details

Hope this helps.

It isn't a Windows thing, it has to do with your drivers. Newer nVidia drivers seem to reserve more video RAM (though I don't know what the technical reason is). If you revert to an older version, I know that it will report more free video RAM to Windows.

The only problem is, since I am not an nVidia user, I don't know which version of drivers it was that reported more video RAM.

I think the x38g opti app also has a smaller RAM footprint than some earlier versions.
I highly suggest trying the Lunatics installer...
