how do you expect to spend eternity?

Quietly resting.

do you believe in an afterlife
or
do you believe that you've got one chance and you better have fun now?

Do you believe in a pre-life?

Where did you spend the last 13.4 billion years?

Did you enjoy it?

If the afterlife is the same as the prelife how will you know?

why go back to just the big bang, certainly something caused the big bang...

why do we think TIME started at the moment of the big bang?

There is no reason to assume a causal principle.

why do we think TIME started at the moment of the big bang?

Because that is when the dimension of time unfolded became greater than zero length.

how do we know that time unfolded then?

The big bang may or may not have been the start of this particular universe. M-theory suggests a collision of membranes changed the frequency of the point of contact, hence allowing mass as we know it to exist, although it is purely theoretical.

The way I see it, is that before I was born, I had a lot of practice being dead. I will be putting that practice to use one day. I don't remember much of the 13.7 billion years that elapsed before I was born, and I don't expect to remember much of the eons that will come after my death. The trick for me, is to stay alive as long as possible. It's too bad people don't live long enough to watch plate techtonics in action. To see mountains and seas rise and fall, and continents change shape. We get a tiny glimpse of what happens, but don't live anywhere near long enough to experience real changes to climate and topography. Even the Earth itself has only been here for about 4.5 billion years, and will be swallowed by the sun in about another 4 billion years. About the same time as the Andromeda galaxy collides with the Milkyway. The rest of the universe will continue on for about 10^100 years, when it will evaporate back into the membranes where it came from.......

Steve, i tend to think of it as "un-alive" as opposed to "undead"
maybe we in our present consciousness cannot remember that time before
we were born...

we have, between our ears, the most complex computers known to man.
the software we use to operate them is evolving constantly...who says
we didn't have human dos 3.1 before birth and we can't access those files anymore.

plus Einstein's relativity theory has been proven on numerous occasions.
he predicted gravitational lensing...and lo and behold it exists...
his theory predicted black holes...and they exists..

the simplest theory wins...

that is the problem everyone has with "The Standard Model"
its unwieldy, its cobbled together...it doesn't flow together...and there are
huge gaps....

String/M-theory builds on Relativity and Quantum Mechanics...
and its the best answer so far...

No.
I found it interesting that I located a website where my question was echoed.
And that same site reminded me, it's not "the simplest explanation tends to be the correct one," but that "all things being equal, the simplest explanation tends to be the best."
I have some questions, which I am unable to frame just yet, but I still believe my point is a valid one.

While generally correct, I do believe events such as the 2004 tsunami did allow us to see changes in the shapes of landmasses, IIRC.

There is no reason to assume a causal principle.

why do we think TIME started at the moment of the big bang?

Because that is when the dimension of time unfolded became greater than zero length.

there is no reason not to...

how do we know that time unfolded then?

Actually there is a reason not to. Many people have a very hard time accepting it.

I think therefore I am is false. You can not get to I am from thinking without an assumption of a causal principal. The rest of the things you need you can prove mathematically, but you have to assume causality.

Here is the rub, If an artificial intelligence is capable of thinking, then you disprove causality. This because of a computing law about a program running on a simulator being unable to tell if it is running on a simulator or on real hardware. Hence thinking is unable to tell if it is a simulation or real.

This leaves us with: I think, therefore there is thinking. And you and the world cease to be real. Besides with the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle we are at best a probability function. So it all neatly falls into place and we can not prove ourself to be real, but we can't exclude reality either.

It is kind of circular, but until time unfolds, there isn't time. Therefore it did not exist before that. However I think you are trying to say that the other dimensions - X,Y,Z - unfolded after time. I'm not aware of a theory that has them unfolding at a different point. Perhaps that is inflation. I can't do the math.

Sorry about that blank post. I'm not sure why it is not showing up, so I'll just take the path of least resistance. All I posted was a t-shirt that read:

Heaven is where...

The police are British
The cooks are Italian
The lovers are French
The mechanics are German
And it's all organized by the Swiss

Hell is where...

The cooks are British
The mechanics are French
The lovers are Swiss
The police are German
And it's all organized by the Italians
