Message 1144647 - Posted: 24 Aug 2011, 19:13:14 UTC - in response to Message 1144624.

Of course, we can ask if there's any reason to believe there are 11 total dimensions since we can barely quantify 4, if we accept time being the 4th. ;-)

You touch on something here Ozz with time possibly being the 4th dimension.
That is, is there a hierarchy of order when it comes to dimensions and that dimension number four can only be occupied by time. Hence time can only exist in a universe providing dimensions 1, 2 and 3 have been formed first?

I fear pulling the topic further off conversation, but I think discussion is always a fine thing, so hopefully this will be excused.

Based upon my understanding of String Theory, there is a sort of hierarchy, but you get the entire package all at once. You cannot have the 10th dimension without the previous 9, nor can you have the first without all ten; they all exist concurrently.

The problem is merely the perception of beings that are limited to a particular dimension. For example, we exist in the third dimension, but we are simultaneously experiencing or co-existing with the higher level dimensions.

Based upon String theory, I do not believe you could have a universe that only exists in the first dimension and without time. Though it is important to remember that it is only a theory and all suppositions can be false. String Theory makes sense to me, so I do buy into it's postulations until a better idea comes along. :-)

What did I say? Pope Gregory IX/Perry is one of my minions and where better to get them than from the ranks of organized religion. A couple hundred years of education by lava pit and they do what they are told I can slip them in right where they can do the most damage and deliver to me the most souls. Isn't he starting to set up another inquisition? The timing may not quite be right in the USA, but the same thing seems to be doing much better with my islamic minions. Soon the world will be back to the dark ages and I'll be harvesting most every soul as they believe the lies my minions, who will head their religions, must feed them or it is back to the lava pits.

Yes, string theory which requires there to be more than three dimensions of space.
I do hope someone finds the answer here soon!!

actually String theory has morphed into m-theory(m=membrane)
m-theory has brought forth multiverses..

cognitive reality may be how the particles that make you up react to this
dimensional universe.

eternity...Me?...........either in a box or an urn........with the ups & downs of life, one is enough for me...it beggars belief that it could be possible to go through the same crap in another universe/dimension.............

As soon as they find out how long a bit of it is, we'll have cracked it !!!

Well, since most are considered to be tightly curled up on themselves they will
have to be unraveled first prior to being measured. The trouble is we have theories built on top of theories built yet again on top of more theories. A pack of cards comes to mind here!!!

and the proof of that is....

There's no proof in either direction. So, I suspect he's trying to apply Occam's Razor.
And it occurred to me in the last few days: which idea about gravity is simpler? Newton's or Einstein's? But which is accepted as closer to the truth, currently?
General and special realtivity, and quantum mechanics are strange things. Can we really say still that the simplest explanation tends to be the best/correct one?

Occam's Razor essentially suggests that the simplest solution that fits all the observed data is probably right one. When applying Newtonian physics to planetary orbits (most noticeable when observing Mercury) or even to GPS, Newton's theories fail. General Relativity works. We continue to use Newtow's theories in most day-to-day applications because they are much, much easier to work with and because they will usually provide close-enough results, but they are not strictly accurate.

General Relativity is, so far as I am aware, the simplest theory of gravity that fits the observed data. Occam's Razor still applies.
Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.

plus Einstein's relativity theory has been proven on numerous occasions.
he predicted gravitational lensing...and lo and behold it exists...
his theory predicted black holes...and they exists..

the simplest theory wins...

that is the problem everyone has with "The Standard Model"
its unwieldy, its cobbled together...it doesn't flow together...and there are
huge gaps....

String/M-theory builds on Relativity and Quantum Mechanics...
and its the best answer so far...

do you believe in an afterlife
or
do you believe that you've got one chance and you better have fun now?

Do you believe in a pre-life?

Where did you spend the last 13.4 billion years?

Did you enjoy it?

If the afterlife is the same as the prelife how will you know?
