I am trying to upgrade my AMD 255 Duel core 3.1 Ghx Cpu , to a Amd 929 quad core CPU. AMD Phenom II X4 925 Quad Core Processor OEM Manufacturer: AMD CPU Type: Desktop Processor Interface: Socket AM3 Processor Class: Phenom II Processor Speed: II X4 925 / 2.08GHz Cores: Quad L2 Cache: 2 MB L3 Cache: 6MB Bus Speed: 2000MHz (4000 MT/s) Fan: Not Included Wattage: 95W Additional Technologies: Cool'n'Quiet AMD Virtualization HyperTransport 3.0 Unlocked Multiplier: No Can anyone tell me if this CPU is a Good one for CUDA and opencl for Crunching ? MY MB will only support a 95W cpu... I can't find a 6 core 95 watt cpu anywhere... Thanks ! |

Can anyone tell me if this CPU is a Good one for CUDA and opencl for Crunching ? No, in fact no CPU is good for CUDA and OpenCL. CUDA is nVidia exclusive and OpenCL is for video cards in general. Both technologies have nothing to do with the CPU. |

I think this is the one you are looking for: 1065T 2.9 GHz socket AM3 95W 45nm SOI (Hex core Phenom) As others have said OpenCL and CUDA are GPU specific and do not work on the CPU. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

OpenCL is for video cards in general. Both technologies have nothing to do with the CPU. OpenCL, or Open Computing Language, can use all kinds of modern processors found in personal computers, servers and handheld/embedded devices, ranging from CPUs to GPUs to any other hardware capable of doing intricate calculations, like co-processors. At this moment it's mostly used to work with GPUs, but that doesn't mean that it is for GPUs only. |

@Floyds: I don't think anyone has shown one CPU to be more helpful than another to the GPUs computing if that was your question. Some have found if it good to leave one core or thread idle to "feed" the GPU on heavy duty crunchers. So more cores the better I reckon. From my bit of browsing it seems only the quad core or fewer AMDs are within the 95W limit of your motherboard. You should also check which processors the BIOS supports. To be honest you'll see better SETI number crunching gains from adding in a reasonable graphics card than aiming for more CPU cores. My quad core intel CPU had a RAC of 1,000 and then when I put in a GTX 260 graphics card it climbed to over 8,000. Maybe also consider what else you use the computer for. Brian. |

If you're still interested take a look at this one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103856&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL081211&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL081211-_-EMC-081211-Index-_-ProcessorsDesktops-_-19103856-L01B |

The AMD cpu specs page lists three X6's that have 95W rating Comparisons The 1065T has top temp of 62C only |
