Well, this is before the bush cuts expire. After they expire ... and they will because it is better hay for Obama if he forces them to expire. Those home owner exemptions are on the chopping block. After all only the uber rich use them anyway. (or so it has been said in the discussions on the budget)
And don't forget 401's are fully taxable on distribution, they aren't Roth's.

The real hit on the 401's will be the super big boys selling out of stocks and moving their cash offshore where the IRS won't get 1099's on the gains.

Gary, I understand the 3.8% versus 2.9% -- that applies to everyone.

But the 3.8% on unearned income as I understand it applies (in joint returns) only if AGI is $250K or more.

So the .9% increase is a flat out increase -- applies to all.

The 3.8% applying to unearned income is only an increase on upper income folks -- *including* retirees with large incomes.

It won't apply to their 401 distributions as I understand it, but their 401 distributions *might* be large enough that their non retirement dividends, interest and capital gains are subject to that tax.

Frankly, folks in that income class are likely to get tax advice early on to avoid 2210 penalties.

So, to be more precise, it is going to snare a small percentage of a small percentage of people and all of those folks are in the upper range of income.

And of course, it is NOT going snare even that small percentage the first year if their estimated tax payments are in line with their 2012 return requirements for 2013.

The 2210 scare you've noted is likely to only a VERY small number of folks.

Oh, and as to selling a house -- well if they bought it during the bubble, probably not to worry about capital gains there. If they bought a house a long time ago they still get a one time freebie for capital gains.

Normally you are sharper about facts regarding the evils of taxation and government.

Sell your home? You owe 3.4% of that to the federal government.

Amazing. Wait they they see the hit on their 401(k) from Obama care. Interest, dividends and capital gains become subject to the 3.8% Medicare tax. How many is that going to snare, especially when they don't prepay that tax and have to file 2210 for not prepaying it and owe penalties and interest. We really should call it the Obama no-care tax act.
