For me uploads and downloads are behaving. But reporting is being very slow, with quite a number of attempts reporting "Internet OK, servers may be down" before the reports get through.

Well; uploads are working, reporting takes a while but it works. Requests for work result in one or 2 Work Units (going to take a hell of a lot of requests to fill the caches).
The problem with downloading is that everything times out within 1-2 seconds of starting. And the couple of Work Units that did download, did so at about 1-2kB/s.

I wonder if one of the download servers is playing up again?
Most downloads timeout as soon as they start. If they don't then it takes 30-120 seconds before it starts downloading, and then it's at 5kB/s or less & often stalls & then times out.
Other times it's downloading within 5-10 seconds of starting, and at 10-20kB/s or better.

Working fine both ways, if slowly, for me.
Watching my earlier today uploads made me think: What's the difference between "upload" and "report"? Surely it should be possible to combine the report into the upload, while this would marginally increase the size of an upload it would reduce the number of internet transactions required so easing the burden on the connection up the hill....

'Uploading' is a dumb file-copy operation, just moving data from your hard disk to their hard disk and leaving it there.

'Reporting' is an active transaction, requiring opening the database on their servers, modifying several tables of data and related indexes. It's actually much more efficient to do that type of transactional work on several tasks at once - we can dig out a technical reference for that if you're interested.

So the decision was made to split the functions - uploads can go one at a time with little additional overhead, and the reporting transactions can be saved up and processed in batches, of sometimes dozens or hundreds at a time.

Thanks Richard. No need to dig out the further explanation as yours is quite adequate.
