Message 1117873 - Posted: 16 Jun 2011, 15:19:28 UTC - in response to Message 1117860.

And more questions: To get AP tasks for ATI, is it a must to enable "Send work from other apps" on web preferences page, even if Astropulse v5.05 already is enabled?

Questions, questions :-)

EDIT: added: I rescheduled back to the CPU from the ATI GPU, lots of tasks, just to get Boinc asking for GPU tasks again, which it does, but doesn't get any. It doesn't get any MB GPU tasks, because I disabled MB on the preferences page, and only have AP 5.05 enabled, and not "Send work from other apps". Maybe I need to have "Send work from other apps" enabled too, to make it send tasks for AP ATI, but then I get MB ATI too I guess....

Oh well

No its not needed.
I leave it unchecked myself.

Note its hard to get APs atm.

Great job guys.
So far the first few tasks have been approx. 100 seconds faster on VHARs with driver 267.59; I'll let things run for a few days then maybe update the drivers.

Oh well

AP ATI and MB ATI require different applications and different app_info sections. Whether you are installing the apps by hand (as you are doing), or running the installer itself, you have the choice of selecting none, either or both of these applications.

If you don't install the MB ATI app, BOINC won't ask for that kind of work. As to AP ATI - that depends on the availability of AstroPulse work in general, and as testers have found and reported here, that can be in short supply some of the time.

Yes, I understand that much, but perhaps I get confused by the statement on Lunatics site in Full release notes of the previous (r456) AP ATI, it says in big yellow text: "To get any AP tasks for GPU don't forget to enable "Send work from other apps" on web preferencies page"

But maybe that only applies if you haven't enabled AP at all on the prefs page.

Then again, when Boinc asks for GPU tasks, it doesn't tell what kind of GPU tasks it wants, if it is as in my case since I have installed both ATI GPU apps, ATI MB it asks for, or ATI AP.

But maybe there is some settings to change in Boinc, so I can see in the Messages tab more of the communication than can be seen now.

YOu'll get them eventually. I think the shorty storm has hindered the production of AP WU's

Great, thanks. Then I can leave the MB unchecked too, so I do not get any ATI MB, because until I have seen that I can get and run ATI AP, that's all I want.

When I'm assured that ATI AP also, works as well as ATI MB, then I can enable "Send work from other apps" so I can feed my ATI MB hunger. I still will not enable MB, because I want AP and only AP for both CPU and GPU as much as possible that is.

BOINC will actually just ask for "work for ATI GPU" - it isn't fussy. It's up to the project to work out which type of work is available, MB or AP, and assign it to the GPU in response to the request.

I hope I do, otherwise I will never know if I installed AP ATI the right way :-)

So, unless I get any work for my ATI AP app, I will never know if I installed it correctly or not. Hehe.....

Maybe a Rescheduler for GPU work between ATI apps would be something to have...

LoL! :-) I feel rather the same way myself, except ours seems to have been born fit and healthy.

Slightly off-topic, but while I think of it: if anybody is adding ATI crunching for SETI for the first time using this installer, but already using the ATI card to crunch for another project, you may find that the recommended BOINC v6.12.26 client handles cross-project scheduling for ATI cards better than the old v6.10.58 client. You can still use an older v6.10 Manager with the new client, if you are having difficulty getting used to the new look and feel.

Just uncheck everything except astropulse if you have enough work for CPU left.

Also create or add in cc_config.xml with

<cc_config>
   <log_flags>
       <work_fetch_debug>1</work_fetch_debug>
    </log_flags>
  <options>
  </options>
</cc_config>

So you can see what your card is fetching.

Just give it some time.

I can't find two WU's with close enough Angle ranges to compare, 2.72 and 2.73 is the closest, but the average time went from 550seconds to 360 seconds and other WU's went from 2,400 seconds down to 1,050 seconds.

This is on a GT525M, I will keep watching and try to find matching WU ranges.

Otherwise, feel free to look at my tasks.

Is this a unified installer? And can I update my drivers later?

Yes, no problem if you match basic requirements.

Thanks, I'll try that later.

I just got one ATI AP task, it's downloading now. I'll test the app in a moment by suspending the ATI MB task that is currently running, as well as the ones I have in the cache.

Ok, so far so good. It is running, and nothing bad happens, and so far no particular lag. It's pushing the GPU to 96-97%, and since I have a 120 mm fan pointing at the GPU, apart from the normal GPU fan, (it's summer, and I have a room temp of 28-30°C, so the GPU need the extra fan) the GPU temp stays at 60°C, and the GPU MEMIO temp is at 66°C.

However one thing I notice that differs from running other apps. The progress indicator isn't updating smoothly, but in jumps of 0.9 % exactly. Maybe that's by design though.

I know that a normal(if there is such an animal) AP, takes about 21-23 hours on my CPU, now it's going to be interesting to see how much faster the GPU can crunch an AP.

James, your 266.58 driver is fine with this installer. I saw someone else mention the newer 275 series drivers may give you a bit of a speed increase though. I ran the 266.58 drivers with no problem but didn't give it enough time before upgrading my drivers to tell for sure if they gave any increase. I did have one down clock incident when I first upped my drivers but a reboot cured it and it has not returned so all we could do is write it off to cosmic interference. :-)
