recent server woes

You need to go to the number crunching forums, create a new thread, and provide your system specs there, and the symptoms you are experiencing. While this process is taking place there will be dropped connections and re-tries, so be patient as it will take a couple of days to get through this stage, then we can expect "normality" to return - until the next time. Servers have plenty of work units available to crunch and are starting to accept returning data. If you aren't getting any new work, might need to make sure your hard drive space limits haven't been met. Had that happen to me once when I changed machines and didn't pay close attention to my hard drive allocations. If you still aren't getting any new work, check over with the number crunchers.
