Message 1107290 - Posted: 18 May 2011, 15:37:30 UTC

I wonder who the h..l thought to change the user interface of the new Boinc manager.
Now with the 6.12.26 version, with default Greek language when a wu is end, I must scroll down all the way to see if there are ’’ready to report’’ wu’s.
And it is partial ok on my small rigs which have 600 – 1000 wu’s. My main cruncher has 7000 and if I want to see them I must scroll 7000 wu’s down? I don’t know if this is happening at the English version.
And PLEASE the message tab MUST be out of the drop down menu, at the advanced view.

It is possible to use the old (6.10.x) BOINC Manager with the new BOINC client.
You need to backup boincmgr.exe (and boinc.dll, I think) from the 6.10.x (C:\Program Files\BOINC) and restore them after upgrading to 6.12.x.

yeah you kinda have to wonder what they were thinking. I don't recall reading complaints about the layout but apparently the software guys did. So like MS the rearrange things so we have to relearn them. I wish they'd have gone with my suggestion and allow the main tabs and the tabs inside to be user moveable. So that we can arrange the tabs to our own liking.

@ Khangollo.Yes but we are talking about the official version. User mustn’t do trick’s. Just install and run.
Agreed with Chris S . I don’t like the project notices. Instead I want back the Message tab. It is much more important.

the excuse for changing messages was that the messages were confusing people and people were asking a lot of questions about the messages. well the messages are still there just in a different less appealing and more difficult to get to

* Fix: Adjust permissions when installed as a service so that GPU applications are not denied access to GPU DLLs (Win)

Does this mean that now Boinc may be installed as a service on Windows machines and Boinc will have access to the GPU's for crunching?

Windows 7 x64 even????

Well, can't hurt to install the latest BOINC on my LT (T2400 C2D)(WIN XP x86).

Be back after the install.

Just takes a few minutes, if Murphy doesn't interfere ;-)

You now can keep 2 separate BOINC windows open BOINC and the LOG-FILE,
as it is now called and can be open and BOINC mgr minimized.

And I like the way the work is shown, Name Project file, progress, Elapsed time,
etc.
What the Messages Tab, is used for and what kind of messages would be displayed?
And why the Option starting another BOINC, this was always possible, even more, but mostly, quite useless!

Keeping the LOG-FILE a separate screen/window, is handy, with BOINC mgr. minimized!

You always have had the ability to sort the tasks by clicking the PROGRESS column. Just click the column heading until the arrow is point down. Also by clicking the SHOW ACTIVE/ALL TASKS button on the left, you can either see them all of you tasks or just those that are active.

Mine is set up to display in active tasks in descending order. If I want to see how many I have to report, I just click the show tasks button on the left. It's been this way af far back as I can remember.

As far as I know the MESSAGE tab is here to stay. It seems that a lot of new comers complained that the old set up was TMI, so they set it up as a tab. A lot of us old heads complained about it being a tab, but I don't think it will return as it was. I keep mine minimized so that it is always available just by clicking it on the task bar at the bottom of my screen.

Message 1107410 - Posted: 18 May 2011, 20:32:35 UTC

I want my startup messages back!

Back in the days of DOS, I could see everything that was loading from my CONFIG.SYS and my AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and any relevant messages that went along with it!

Now Microsoft thinks I don't need to see those messages. I'm just presented with a "Starting Windows" graphic, and sometimes an uninformative "Configuring Updates" message before I can log in! Why do they have to make things so hard for people like me?

What? Most people didn't understand those DOS messages? Most people read them and misinterpreted informative messages as errors? Well they should learn!

And I want my Event Viewer messages right on the Windows desktop! I don't want to have to dig deep in Administrative Tools to find my Event Viewer! How dare Microsoft hide it to where people can't find it? What do you mean most poeple don't understand the messages in Event Viewer!?!

Moral of the story: Remember, we all started using BOINC, which was someone else's idea to begin with. Many people criticized the software for being too "geeky", and that criticism sticks to this day. If the Messages tab wasn't a tab to begin with, would we still be having this argument today? I see nothing wrong with the developers trying to give BOINC a more universal appeal to attract more users for the projects, even if that means our techy messages needs to be buried a little deeper to prevent it from scaring some people.

If we all truly believe in distributed computing, and that every CPU on every platform in every device should be spending their spare cycles crunching for science to further mankind, then this is the right path to follow.

For me "the right path to follow" is: give options to the users!

The problem is not with the new default look - The problem is that it is the only look.

The best option will be the ability to show/hide any tab (including Notices and Messages/Event Log).
New to BOINC will see/use Notices and old users probably will re-enable Messages tab.

Another good behavior will be if the installation detects it is an upgrade (so user is familiar with BOINC) and asks the user which tabs to show (Notices and/or Messages).

(and I know I can use the older BOINC Manager when/if I go to 6.12.x)

The only people that are asking for options are the advanced users, which are a minority of users.

Then, many of us advanced users help out over in Q&A (like you and I) and often we'll end up telling the user to "unhide" the Messages Tab and tell us what's in there, which means they'll leave the Messages tab unhidden after they've received help. Then we're back at square one of users seeing the Messages tab and being able to misinterpret informative messages as errors.

People abuse options they're given. People have the option of setting up to 20 days of cache even though this messes with the BOINC scheduler, yet people do it anyway, then they complain that BOINC is broken.

While we're screaming for options, I still want an optimized application that has the screen saver built in! I want efficient processing but I still want to show off the pretty graphics on my 54" LCD TV!

And that's why there are a couple of alternatives for the BOINC manager, made specifically for advanced users.

Just put this version on the CQ10 netbook.

No I don't like it. I like to have any fields I like in any order. It's not logical to have the progress on the far left. You should introduce each unit reading form the left, with the progress central or at the end.

What would be nice is to be able to order the units in terms of resend, so you can control the order of processing by doing your resends first. Or what about this being a future feature/option anyway? I always think it's good science.

I'll be sticking to 6.10.xx on main Inspiron 531 until it's changed.

Again, why the micro-managing of BOINC? Why not let BOINC's scheduler handle it? Works great for me.

I'm still holding onto 5.10.45 on my Domain Controllers while I await a newer version that's compatible. ;-)

There is no need to wait!

Just copy the 6.12.26_windows_x86_64.exe to a separate directory, and run "boinc_6.12.26_windows_x86_64 /a" from CMD in that directory. Copy the extracted files from ..\Program Files 64\BOINC and replace the files in destination directory %Programfiles%\boinc on Domain controller.

I have done this on my DCs since the weird choice not to recognise Active Directory / not to use Global Account API's.

And of course make sure you replace boincmngr.exe and boinc.dll with the properly designed 6.10.60 versions :-)
