Ok trying to find a suitable PSU for a theoretical system of i7-2600K, Z86 + quad GTX570s (I think 570s is enough in terms of heat + overall wall-wattage). Which PSU? GTX570 TDP 244W, *4 = 1kW, so a 1500W PSU safe? E.g http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ThermalTake-W0171-1500W-ToughPower-Cable-Man-PSU-/310290733944?pt=UK_Computing_PowerSupplies_EH&hash=item483ec4db78#ht_2999wt_981 |

Ouch! $500 for a PSU? Can you possibly use two smaller PSUs in tandem in your setup? |

Which is better RAC, quad 570 or twin 590? Straight questions here... |

If you don't know which power-supply you want to choose for look on the following link here you can calculate what for power-supply you need for your PC-configuration. I use this link always when I want to assemble a PC. http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp |

I would be more worried about the heat of such a build and probably choose water or another liquid, to cool the rig. But to be at the safe side and the PSU load is 75%, you are fine. So 1250W or 1500W, I tried to run the i7 +GPUs on a 650W PSU, wouldn't even BOOT, a 850W was enough to BOOT, but got instable after an hour of 100% GPU load on both cards, +12V also dropped to 11.8 and 11.6, which is too low. Under 'normal'circumstances a 1000W would be sufficient! (And use 4 560 cards ;) ) Running SETI optized and GPUs at 100%, is heavier then a regular Stress-Test! I've a i7-2600, still stock frq., and 2 HD5870 which produce already too much heat. With both GPU at 100%, it draws 550-600Watt, stock CPU cooler, is too small. And the PSU, which has by far the highest efficiency and hardy gets warm at all, is placed in the top of the case. (I'd like the GPUs in the top CPU and DRAM lower and PSU at the bottom.) |

(I'd like the GPUs in the top CPU and DRAM lower and PSU at the bottom.) Fred - then you need a case like the Lian-li V1xxx or V2xxx, both of which have the MB inverted (slots above processors) and CPU below the MB tray. |

Hmm therefore tri 580s... |

(I'd like the GPUs in the top CPU and DRAM lower and PSU at the bottom.) Whoops - that's PSU, not CPU, below the motherboard (in a semi-isolated separate compartment). |

Hmm therefore tri 580s... This is what I would do. Instead of pay extra for a HUGE power supply to run quad cards I would imagine you would get better performance out of 3x 580's. Should work out to about the same money and much better results. Traveling through space at ~67,000mph! |

I agree, 3 High End GPU's (GTX470,480, 570,580,590), doing 2, 3 or 4 WU's at a time, combined with an i7(-2600), should give a nice troughput. Easier to find a suitable motherboard and PSU and case, like Lian Li. For the moment, I just turned it upside down, DVDWR also turned. Looks a bit funny, but works OK. Switching cases, cost me way too much time. |

HAHA that's a radical solution!!! Hey suppose you could insert your CD/DVD-drive the other way round, so with the case upside down the drive would be the right way up, so you could still sensibly use it... I like the idea of 3 cards not 4. Very-alot-much. Edit: sorry just realised what you said - you've turned the drive round also... |
