Thought this was pretty interesting. I have not researched all the links in the article yet, but still makes for an interesting conversation. What do you guys think?

Article:Official ET Disclosure? "NSA Document Admits ET Contact"

Document in PDF format: Key to Extraterrestrial Messages (For all you math nuts, this document is truly for you. lots of equations and such. Interesting because this document gives us the ability to calculate it ourselves and make our own decision).

On October 21, 2004, the NSA approved for release to the public a portion of their NSA Journal Vol. XIV No. 1. This is a report of a presentation given to the NSA by Dr. Howard Campaigne regarding the decoding of extraterrestrial messages that had been received “form outer space”. Apparently, these messages had actually been received via the Sputnik satellite, but no one had any idea how to decode them at the time.

At some time, unspecified in the document, Dr. Howard Campaigne and some other NSA super mathematicians in the crypto department had been given the task of decoding the messages. There were a total of 29 messages to be decoded—quite an undertaking.

It is curious, to say the least, that this document was cleared for release on October 21, 2004. Why was that? Because the NSA did not release it into public information until April 21, 2011. Though cleared for release, the NSA had beenstonewalling it along with hundreds of other NSA documents about contact with UFOs and extraterrestrials until they lost the lawsuit brought by Peter Gersten, a lawyer from Arizona. When they well and truly lost, the judge’s order had to be carried out, and the documents had to be released.

That is interesting Jason!

So i read the pdf document on the NSA website, the supposed journal article. The document just discusses decoding the message. It never talks about where the signal came from, it just says its from the Sputnik satellite.

So really, the signal could be anything!!! It sounds like its terrestrial in origin, possibly a signal the Sputnik picked up from one of our own TV or mobile phone satellites, or one of our astronomy space telescopes. They never even mention the frequency the signal was picked up on.

Very interesting since googling Dr. Howard campaigne's name only shows conspiracy websites

Of course there were signals form Sputnik.

If they were decoded, then what did they say. Let me guess ; BEEP, BEEP, BEEP.........

thats true too. I don't think sputnik was set up with a receiver. it only transmitted data. http://www.mentallandscape.com/S_Sputnik1.htm
Basically someone did a poor job on researching sputnik.

Here's a trick, if you want to start a conspiracy at least make sure its plausible

'Sputnik' a generic term used by Soviet and Russian space programs. There were over 40 Sputnik satellites between 1957 and 1998. Many of them certainly had radio receivers. It's difficult to know what to make of this story. Some maintain that the 29 messages were merely code-breaking exercises, which originated on Earth. That all this business about a satellite and extraterrestrials was just an imaginative gimmick to dress up the article. Others claim that this is not the case; that the messages are genuinely extraterrestrial. The article was apparently featured in a real NSA publication. Dr. Howard Campaigne apparently a long-time, legitimate computer and cryptographic expert for the government. See the following: http://9websites.com/airforce/nsa-comp.htm If this were all just an exercise, one wonders why that wasn't made clear in the NSA article. They would surely have understood how the article could be misunderstood, as written, and sought to avoid a discreditable connection with loose talk about real extraterrestrial messages. All that was needed was a clear statement that the extraterrestrial connection was a flight of imagination. As this does not appear in the article, as given, their is legitimate doubt raised about the 'exercise' scenario. Michael

Lets say it is real and that it is an ET signal. If they wanted to communicate with us, and assuming this came from the earliest Sputnik, then a "beep beep beep" would be something along the lines of Morse Code. Possible yes, but I would say unlikely. But who knows. I still think the governments are hiding a lot about space and stuff to do with it. At this point, anything that mentions ET signals, most people would first call it a conspiracy or a hoax. that seems commonplace these days.

The following article seems to clear up the mystery, providing the wider context. I still think that Dr. Campaigne's article should have had a clearer editorial explanation. This would have prevented all the recent misunderstanding. http://www.openminds.tv/nsa-practices-deciphering-et-signals-668/

so giving us another link to another conspiracy site makes it clearer? How about the mysterious Dr. whose name only gets mentioned on conspiracy nut sites.

read Dr. callinahos's bio at the NSA http://www.nsa.gov/about/cryptologic_heritage/hall_of_honor/2003/callimahos.shtml You'll notice that it is conspicuously lacking in anything UFO. seems another wild goose chase is afoot

I love a good conspiracy! Governments are always covering stuff up! Makes you wonder why we elect them in the first place.

It is not the pollies that cover these things up but the so called civil servants. The pollies probibly know as much about this as we do IE very little.

As much as I want to agree, I have to disagree. I have seen to many politicians lie cheat and steal for me to believe everything they tell us. I have no reason to believe that every single one of them are telling the truth. They get paid too much.

Interesting, i agree, the document does not state a location of source in space of the radio transmissions. Any ETI transmissions would give the location of the source. For example, if those messages came from the direction of Centauri system, then that brings more substance/validity to ETI transmissions. The document does not give radio fraquencies, so that means that all the those messages could have an Earthly origin. The key thing is, identification of source and its radio frequency nature.

I think they are just playing out a scenario,
what they might do IF a signal was detected,
how they might go about decoding it.

Supposing we get a message from a race of slugs & millipedes that live 100 miles down in a toxic ocean of slime somewhere..

I'd love to meet an advanced race of slugs & millipedes!

Now that really would be cool!

Donegal_TDI,
I'm currently in the middle of decoding ET signals. I have been at it for over 6 months now. I always thought that if mankind detected a signal from ET, the best scientists in the world would be put to work decoding it with all the resources they need.

But no, in the end it has turned out to be me who receives the signal. And to top that off, i haven't a clue how to decode it. So without any help from anyone, cos nobody would believe me if i told them, i have to go and learn how to decode the information by myself.

Sounds like i'm talking complete rubbish, doesn't it? Well thats the way it worked out. When i do finally crack the code i will publish my results and everyone will know what i'm talking about. Until then, the world will just have to wait.

The point is that even from the early days of sci-fi, like Dan Dare and the Treens, we have been conditioned to believe that any Aliens would be basically bipeds, but with very different faces and heads. Mainly of course so that it makes it easier for human actors with masks to play parts in films.

Panspermia explains why aliens resemble humans. Some ETs may be fully human.

As for our conditioning, I'd say that was intentional. Many films labeled as fiction actually happened - there is evidence that the stories behind 2001 (discovering alien artifacts) and Close Encounters are true and accurate.
