I was running a Celeron E-1400 dual @ 2.0G for quite awhile with no problems. Yes, it was slower than what I'm running now but it got the job done. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

...But the celeron is too slow for seti ... I'm running a 1.8GHz Celeron on my other PC and it runs Seti fine, just don't expect large RAC numbers. CPU Seti plays very nicely with other programs and services, I don't notice any performance degradation at all. |

...the celeron is too slow for seti... When my new psu arrives I will give seti a try on my WHS machine/web server/phone server.

...the celeron is too slow for seti... SETI on any Celeron which fits a P5N-E would probably be more productive than 75% of the hosts supporting this project, and is run at the lowest possible priority so really does get out of the way of other applications quite well. You might at least give it a try to see if the additional power usage etc. is small enough to not be a problem. Joe |

I installed WHS os and will use as a web server and a phone server. But the celeron is too slow for seti and the phone server uses a lot of cpu resources but maybe I can run cuda on the 210 video card untill I can put in a better cpu. I also reseated the cpu cooler with new thermal paste the old paste had dried up.

I want to thank every one for their help. It turns out it was a bad psu which I have since ordered a replacement.

I have seen a few people say recently that they have had issue with computers not being able to boot or turn on and replacing the battery fixed it. Other then if the battery failed in a direct short I can't think of why a dead battery would cause a system not to operate. I've had several machine loose their bios battery & worked fine with the battery dead. Other then loosing their settings if the machine was unplugged. I would wonder if resetting the CMOS/BIOS would have fixed the issue in those same situations. Also removing the battery and powering on the system could be done. Hi ,if you can't get to the BIOS, it is the L-Ion Battery. Don't know how old your BIOS is on that rig, you may want to check BIOS settings. (I had similar problems with an ASUS P5E mobo, after 2 years battery looked OK and even showed 3.11V on a Digital MilliVolt meter, but measuring with a 10 Ohm resistor paralell, it showed 2.2V and I did put a new one in and it worked again.) But several other things like CPU, PSU, Mobo, can cause troubles....

The last time I used it the psu was good and so was the cpu. It has been sitting not in use for 2 or 3 years. I have no spare psu or battery except what is in my i7 which is in use now. I will swap out battery and then psu for testing it. I will reset the cpu cooler.

I am building a WHS machine and I am having trouble with it. With the power cord plugged in and a green light on the motherboard. When I push in the power button the CPU and case fans spin briefly and then stop. What can I do to get it powered up? This could also be a bad CPU. That's what happens when the CPU is bad (or not seated properly). If the CPU were good and something else bad (except PSU) you would get some beep code if it didn't POST. Do you have a speaker attached to the MB, or does it have a built-in buzzer? |

I'd try substituting a few components if possible, starting with the PSU if possible, The LED on the MB is normally just the +5v Standby most of the time. When I first tried to upgrade my P4 to a C2D system I bought a Asus STRIKER II NSE board. I had it all together with some OCZ memory and a BFG 8800GT. The BFG power supply I order hadn't arrived yet. So I gave it a go with a 350w Antec I already had. It spooled up & ran fine. The BFG supply arrived and when put in the system did what your are getting. Powered on briefly then off. I bench tested the PSU and it seemed fine. It also powered my my old P4 system fine. I returned it as defective and got 2 more before giving up and ordering an Enermax which worked. I couldn't figure out what was going on other than the fact that MB just didn't like that PSU. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours |

I'd try substituting a few components if possible, starting with the PSU if possible, The psu is good because the green light on the motherboard stays on and the fans spin briefly. I can of suspected the bios battery. I wanted to hear what others thopught. I will use my volt meter and check the battery.

Can we have further info on the whole system, CPU, memory, GPU's, PSU's etc, Celeron CPU and 3 case fans I took out the memory and video card and hard drive and dvd because of this problem. I had it as my main cruncher until I replaced it with my I7 and it was replaced a few years ago and now I want to use as a WHS machine but when I cut it on the fans only spin briefly and stops. It is in a zeon case and 450 psu.

Now the chipset on that particular board is not only very fussy with what's plugged into it it's also very unreliable (it has a very high failure rate and its age largely becomes a huge factor) so supplying details on all the hardware that's being used with it would help a great deal. Right now only Celeron CPU and fan and 3 case fans.
