And also most countrys do have a census. Even though we hate filling the things out they do have a purpose.

If you are so inclined, now would be a good time to pray for all those who survived the initial disaster.

If authorities cannot regain control of the nuclear facilities, this is going to get even worse.

Kitties bow their heads in prayer and tears now.

Uuh...the third Reactor looks more damaged than the first one:

Having worked with Pressurized Water Reactors for 16 of my 20 years in the Navy, and having a certain level of familiarity with the Boiling Water Reactor design of the Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors, I must disagree. The reactors ARE under control, and the operators are managing the situation very well, all things considered.

That the reactors have held up as well as they have, given the unprecidented shocks of a Mag. 8.9 earthquake, and the ensuing tsunami and 6.5-7.0 aftershocks, speaks well of both the design and the response of the operators.

This will NOT be another Chernobyl. Some core damage has occurred, but the reactor cores are still contained. The steam venting is being controlled by the operators. The hydrogen explosions, by all reports I have seen, are outside the reactor containments, but inside the buildings.

The radioactivity in the released steam is low-level and short-lived, and should not be a serious health hazard to anyone exposed to it.

Donald.......
Thank you very much for that link.
I hope all the assertions of the author are indeed correct, as I am sure that full damage inspection has not yet occurred.

Very good information.

Yeah, Good point Donald, I've read this low level stuff decays pretty fast, which is a good thing.

Looks like things are not going as well as we had hoped.

Reports of a fire (quickly put out) at Fukushima Dai-ichi Unit #4 (was already shutdown when the quake occurred, but was still near normal operating pressure/temperature), and an explosion inside the containment for Unit #2, possibly near the cooling basin at the base of the pressure vessel. Fuel rods may have been uncovered for a time today, probably causing some overheating and/or cladding damage, and generating more steam.

Higher than normal radiation levels reported near Reactor #4, but no reports of higher levels of radioactive material being released. Evacuation radius expanded to 30 km, those not able to leave told to remain indoors, just in case.

Still pumping seawater into the reactors/containments.

Expecting freezing temps and possible snow overnight - maybe Mother Nature is going to help out a little.

The pools containing spent fuel rods are warming up, according to the NYTimes. Things are horribly wrong.

According to my literature acute radiation toxicity occurs above an exposure of 500 mSv and LD50 is some 3 Sv.
'safe' 'allowed' levels are some 20 mSv/a

I was in Milano on the evening of the Friuli quake of 1976 and the building swayed one meter to left and one to the right at my 16th floor, but there was no tsunami, of course. Quakes are terrifying and a quake/tsunami is something almost unbearable. Add to this the nuclear terror and the Japan people need all our prayers. May God help them.

I've sort of gotten use to them. At age 11 I experienced my first big one a 6.7. For some reason I felt it coming, got out of bed, put on my motorcycle helmet and went to the window to watch it come. I've experienced about 30 6.0 and above quakes. I just surprised myself. I thought it was around 5 until I checked the list.

Here is an interactive list of So Cal quakes

The biggest quake I was in was the 6.7 the Northridge quake, in 1994. That one threw me out of bed.

I have also been in a tall building during a major quake. I was on the 21st floor of what was then know as the First Interstate building during the Whittier Quake. That was fun. Rock'n and Roll'in. What was not fun was walking down the fire stairs. We had to evacuate and they didn't let us use the elevators.

I've gotten used to them too, I experienced My 1st quake in 1971, The Sylmar Quake, One of the two van norman reservoirs had to be drained as It was on the fault line or close to It and one of the reservoirs had a large crack in It and there are/were homes below, The I5/SR14 interchange collapsed for the 1st time. I was in bed when the Quake struck in an older house that was built on river deposits and so We felt It there, But since We were about to head up to Oregon on a trip, It didn't matter too much, We just drove around the damage at the I5/SR14 interchange as directed by CalTrans signs, I even saw the concrete overpass to the 14 laying on the ground, With a 1960 to 1963 Chevy C10/K10-C30/K30 pickup underneath It, I think that only the tailgate was salvageable, I was 11 years old then.

Aftershock with preliminary magnitude of 6.1 shakes eastern part of Honshu, Japan, U.S. Geological Survey says.

First quake I remember is the Sylmar quake. I'm sure I felt a few earlier ones, but that is the first one I remember.

1975, I was on USS Seadragon, we had just tied up to the Submarine Tender in Guam. I was heading topside to bring on shore power when the whole boat starts bouncing up and down like they had triggered the Emergency Ballast Tank Blow by accident. Earthquake out in the Mariana Trench.

In 1983 or 84, I was stationed in San Diego when an earthquake off-shore caused my waterbed to toss me out on the floor.

1989 I was at Mare Island Navy Yard, at Vallejo north of Oakland, rode out the Loma Prieta (World Series) quake on the end of my bunk. My boat moved a couple inches on its blocks in the drydock.

And I got woke up by the 1994 Northridge quake, too. Sloshed 2 inches of water out of the swimming pool.

Those are the most memorable ones.

Kitty prayers still going out to all in Japan.
And right now, for the 50 courageous power plant workers that are risking their lives to still try to regain control of the Dai-ichi reactors.
