I'm sorry but no panic is happening here.

Cheers.

Unfortunately only 2 of the 5 MB splitters are running, so work will continue to be scarce for a while.

Uh oh!
Network traffic is now non-existant. No uploads, no downloads. Barely a trickle in either direction.

It's back up now, must have just been a hiccup. I had 20-30 pending uploads that had me worried, but a single hit on the RETRY had them moving :)

Just noticed that.
I suspect it won't be back to full strength till people come in tomorrow & give it a kick in person.

Well, it seems to be a shortage of new workunits. Maybe we've scraped the bottom of the barrel, and they need to wait for new work coming from Arecibo. However I doubt that, there should be tons of uncrunched WU's in storage, just ready to feed the splitters with.

Should be I would think also, however you have to free up room before you can move more, maybe that's what's going on. Either that or they disabled on purpose until the can get the some ~4million returns validated? Guess we will see in the coming days.

It takes time to run the software blanking on the tapes before they can be loaded for splitting. Before Synergy was called into duty, blanking and feeding the splitters was its burn-in duty.

I don't know what handles blanking and splitter feeding now, but I do remember hearing in at least one of Matt's posts that Bob is nudging that process along one tape at a time.

How much horsepower does that take. Maybe we could work on getting a dedicated NEW machine to do it. It would be a nice/little/cheaper project.

No idea. I think it was Maul that was doing it before, and now Synergy seems to be handling it the same or better performance than Maul did.

A couple of splitters appear to have taken themselves out of action.

Still around 200k ready to send, so I don't think that's a problem unless it continues to drop.

I would imagine that the more power you can dedicate to it the better it would be. However it's also one of those tasks that doesn't appear to need to run constantly on a dedicated box since we aren't always short of WU's I suppose. If you do have one running none stop blanking them out then you start running into storage considerations. Delicate balancing act for sure, but if people were willing I'm sure they would find and put to good use a new server ;).

What is Synergy doing now? I know what ntpckr does(in laymans terms) but what is rfi?

Thank you! Was wondering exactly what that meant, so basically Synergy is prepping up everything to be split?

Yes, that is what Synergy is doing right now. Not only ntpckr, but doing the blanking on the tapes so they can be split.

That may be so, but the status page rfi1, 2, 3 and 4 processes correspond to source code to do RFI removal on the NTPCkr metacandidates. Refer to Eric's CANDIDATE IDENTIFICATION AND INTERFERENCE REMOVAL IN SETI@HOME paper, specifically sections 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4.

Incidentally, the blanking of the "tape" files is done in two parts. The "software blanking" analysis adds or replaces the track which indicates what parts of the data needs blanking, the splitters do the actual replacement of those parts with shaped noise.

Ah. I must have mis-interpreted what the process listings on the server page were then. I remember Matt said Synergy was getting a burn in by doing the software blanking, and rfi1-4 showed up on the status page around the same time, so I put those two things together.

2+2 doesn't always equal 4. :p
