Got it in one. 20-odd uploads across five machines uploaded to 208.68.240.16, as they should have been all along.

Return of an old favourite here:

About to connect() to setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu ....
Trying 16.240.68.208

(Think about it. Or look it up.)

Time to reboot my router, I think - dns obviously needs a tickle :-)

Rebooting didn't help, but entering this in the HOSTS file did

208.68.240.16 16.240.68.208
208.68.240.16 setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu

EDIT: Well uploading helped, but I can't contact servers to report...

EDIT2: Adding this helped :)

208.68.240.20 setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu

Message 1080097 - Posted: 21 Feb 2011, 18:25:55 UTC

Yesterday everything worked fine, but today on both PC´s up/downloads not possible. Tried reboots, installation of other versions, nothing worked...
Still:
21.02.2011 18:59:03 Starting BOINC client version 6.12.15 for windows_intelx86
21.02.2011 18:59:03 OS: Microsoft Windows 7: Ultimate x86 Edition
21.02.2011 19:15:14 | SETI@home | Temporarily failed upload: can't resolve hostname
21.02.2011 19:15:18 Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
21.02.2011 19:15:19 Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

Any idea what could help?

208.68.240.16 setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu
208.68.240.20 setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu

Remember to take both those out once you (or your ISP) have got your local DNS lookups sorted out.

Have you tried the good old "ipconfig /flushdns" ?

Heads up folks. Looks like there might be some big DNS issues, apart from "can't resolve hostname"

Just tried sending an email to boinc_alpha, and got

Sorry, we were unable to deliver your message to the following address.

<boinc_alpha@ssl.berkeley.edu>:
No MX or A records for ssl.berkeley.edu

back from my ISP.

No amount of re-installing is going to fix that.

Might be a missing MX record, ping quite happily finds the IP.

General DNS shenanigans would explain the sporadic reports we're getting of "can't resolve hostname".

Certainly, I won't be able to ask my ISP (British Telecom partnered with Yahoo Mail) to try a different DNS resolver ;P

Edit - Do we have a DNS expert in the house? Ned?

You don't need to ask them. Just change it on your machine, or router, to any of the many publicly available DNS servers.
One option is http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/

Note the MX record is a Mail eXchange record, only for e-mail.

OK. Talk me through it one step at a time, please.

My outgoing mail, addressed to say davea@ssl.berkeley.edu, gets passed by smtp to mail.btopenworld.com

About half an hour later, I get an email back from MAILER-DAEMON@nm16.bullet.mail.ukl.yahoo.com

It says "No MX or A records for ssl.berkeley.edu"

Anyone know an open-relay SMTP server that does have (or have access to) an MX record for ssl.berkeley.edu?

LOL

I don't believe you will find an Open-Relay SMTP Server. If so,
they are all blacklisted by all Mail Provider because of Spamming. :D

Precisely. That's why I use the SMTP server - with authentication - provided by my ISP. That way, my outgoing mail doesn't get blacklisted or treated as spam.

OK, could someone using these super-wizzy dns records please use one of them to send an email to davea@ssl.berkeley.edu, reporting that there seems to be a problem with Changeset [23079], and would he terribly much mind having a look at http://aqua.dwavesys.com/forum_thread.php?id=747? Ta.
