Message 1073531 - Posted: 2 Feb 2011, 20:10:37 UTC - in response to Message 1073529.

I've got an old 4670, using 11.1 drivers on 32bit XP. I'm able to run the ati AP opencl app just fine with the default settings(just completed wu)

I tried using the app_info.xml snippet posted with default settings. Both the non-HD5 and HD5 apps show up as running in boinc but, cpu usage stays at max, gpu load at 0% and it never updates the progress bar. It just sits there running with no errors.

I tried increasing period_iterations_num and seeing -hp with no change in result.
Before reinstalling drivers I did have a few error out but, I'm not sure if that was the same cause. (example)

Not sure if there is anything to be done but, I wanted to thank you for the work you've put in developing these apps. :)

Error: Getting Platforms. (clGetPlatformsIDs)

in your example runtime wasn't able to compile kernels, it even could not retrieve info about available OpenCL platforms.
And with HD4xxx you could "forget" about HD5 version it will not work on these GPUs (by definition ;) ).

Strange that OpenCL AP runs OK in such conditions, at least platform retrieving and kernel compilation code is shared between these apps...

Ah...
Max work group size: 128

Sorry, this max workgroup size is unsupported in r177 of ATi MB. COntinue with AstroPulse for now and wait next release, it will fix this issue (listed in known issues in release readme)

Ahh, I read that note but, didn't think to check if it applied to this model. Its good to at least know the cause.

thanks again :)

So far it's known that "usual" non-HD5 version works on HD6xxx w/o problems.
Unfortunately, it not using shared memory features of new GPUs and runs slower. Will benefit of stable working outweight slower computation - don't know.
I still hope that current instability of HD6xxx GPUs will be fixed with new driver release.

I'm testing with HD6970 Win7-64 8Gig on a AMD II X6 1090T
Opt.Seti on all 6 cores + 1 GPU
Used unified installer 0.37 and added the lines as discribed in app_info
added the apps to the setiprojectmap
and it worked just fine after restart.
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1788849792
The next one already validated and was faster than the Cuda-wingman (GTS250)
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=688714341
After that the most wu's do about 20 minutes.

I now try Fred's Priority on high and i't looks like it take 1 minute off!

Tried to update to latest Catalist (11.1)but after the update it still shows the older version (10.12)

aad
uninstall the old one and then install the new one
you need to increase your fan speed

Did that and made no difference.
There's no errors and installation said oke but still I see Version 10.12
Maybe a programme-mistake?

Fanspeed is on automatic.
I'll think it's quite cool for a GPU who is working hard on a wu!

actually that is quite hot. You want to keep that GPU under 60C 70+ is way to hot. whats a few watts to keep your GPU cooler and last longer. I have my GPU fan set at 75% and it runs in the high 40's to low 50's depending on the season

1. Download the appropriate OpenCL version of ati drivers

2. uninstall your old ATI drivers.

3. Install new ATI drivers, current version 11.1 you'll need to restart your computer

4. download the multibeam apps from Lunatics. At this point stop running BOINC. Make sure all the BOINC processes are turned off in the task manager (CTRL-Shift-ESC)

5a. for Windows vista/7
unzip then copy/paste the lunatics ati multibeam app into your c: /program data(may be hidden ask for info how to unhide)/BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu folder.

5b.for windows 2k/xp
unzip then copy/paste the files into the C:/Documents and settings/(user folder-mine is under "all users")/Application Data(may be a hidden file)/BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu folder

6. have an app_info file yet?

7a yes. continue to 7b No. skip to #8

7b. for 4XXX series ATI cards, locate your app_info in the same folder that you just put the ati files.
paste this app_info data into your current app_info between the second to the last and last line </app_info>

<app>
<name>setiathome_enhanced</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>MB_6.10_win_SSE3_ATI_r177.exe</name>

</app_version>

7c
for 5XXX series cards install this app_info

<app>
<name>setiathome_enhanced</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>MB_6.10_win_SSE3_ATI_HD5_r177.exe</name>

<copy_file/>
</file_ref>
<coproc>
<type>ATI</type>
<count>0.5</count>
</coproc>
</app_version>

This is from my app_info. if you don't want to or are unable to run more than 1 WU at a time please remove -period_iterations_num 2 -instances_per_device 2 from your command line.

8. Say what no app_info. The easiest way to get one is to install optimized apps. found here. install either the 32 bit or 64 bit which ever system you have. you'll need to know which level SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE3(amd), SSSE3, or SSE4.1 you can run. once you have the optimized apps installed and you can return to 7b.
close the app_info, close other folders. restart BOINC. you should be able to start downloading 6.10 multibeam wu's they should start processing from there

I know I probably skipped something or wasn't very clear in places. Please update or add as you see fit

2. uninstall your old ATI drivers.

I use this post for removing ATI drivers, but it might clear your AMD/NVIDIA drivers much better.

Generally speaking the ATI drivers ask if you want to uninstall when you try to install new drivers. Usually that is sufficient to remove old data

Raistmer has said that the drivers for the 6XXX aren't mature. So I intend to take it slow at first. I'll try running my current hd5 app and see if it works. If not I'll back off to the generic version while running 2 at a time. When I see that working I'll start running 4 at a time. the Card should easily handle that quite easily

The MB app is still a bit buggy for 69xx cards. I was having random driver restarts when I ran 2 tasks at a time, but it was fine when I was running 1 AP and 1 MB. Of course 2 AP is perfectly fine as well, with no issues whatsoever. I also have the 2gb model (but 6950 with unlocked shaders... 1408 to 1536).

I don't know if you run any other projects, but you owe it to yourself to watch a 69xx series crunch some milkyway@home units. Fassssssst, to say the least! It marches through a unit every 1 minute, which is about 7x faster than my GTX 460s. I don't know if they can be directly compared though, in terms of work done, but it's really cool to see that progress bar fly from 0-100 in a minute. Might be something to keep you entertained until seti comes back up. I got almost 350k credits yesterday alone on milkyway with the new sandy bridge system and the 6950. Very different scoring system than seti, I believe though.

Anyway, I look forward to hearing some of your thoughts on the 6970 and whether you have driver restarts or other issues. Please keep us all posted.

I wonder if I can run more than one on MW

BTW they crippled those shaders for a reason. that might be the source of the glitchiness

I've got my 6970 onboard now. No seti work yet though. I've ran some Primegrid and Milkyway on it. I've noticed a major improvement on times with both. MW as usual runs the GPU very hot and forced me to run the Fan much higher and with much more noise.
