.. for the time being, nobody knows anything real news - since a very long time; that´s for me main cause also of this many roumors around. so .. they aren´t down with the servers .. but also down with information. that means for me - really down at all .. so lets just WAIT - i don´t believe, we can move anything right now - lean back! better? ;-) .. (actually first time in my life now quoted myself) ;-) so finally, before i go off 4 tonite .. .. this all looks like not being managed in a "professional" way; it seems to be, what in german i would call "individualisten-biotop" (maybe carole might help me here 4 translation). this is not meant negative, because there is many good reasons to have operations running like that .. but, on the other hand, it´s very much vulnerable to crisis .. in many ways. not a rigid (with a lot of shortcomimgs too), but very fragile structure it´s mainly depending on the participants; if any is hurt, out of order or "away", the whole system is lagging completely .. NOTHING works any more in an instance (reminds me of the universe, doesn´t it?) .. .. perfect example for "entanglement" .. and so far it is ok. if such things occur, we should be alert about severe things wrong on a deeper (or higher) level. this is - for me - not just a topic of having work-load .. it´s far more a "wake-up-call" to think about, if we all together are (still - or never) doing well - as we do - or even not ....... |

Don't forget that this project is managed out of California, time-zone UTC-8. It's only just gone 12 noon there, on the first working day of the week. The staff much prefer to evaluate situations, and fix as much as they can, rather than post premature information which might prove to be misleading. It's usually better to look for news around 16:00 Pacific time, midnight UTC - not ideal for us Europeans, but that's one consequence of participating in a global project. |

It's also a holiday here in the US - not just Valentine's Day, but also the combination of George Washington's and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays that we call President's Day. Many educational facilities are closed for the day. |

And the mailman made his rounds here today, so I think it's next week. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |

Unfortunately the company I work for doesn't take President's Day off, so I would need to show up whether it's a holiday or not. |

Greetings, Just copy the boinc data directory and put it on a flash drive or something similar, do your upgrades, install BOINC, and then overwrite the data directory with the backup. I do that every time I reload my Ghost image of the OS install and have never had a problem with it. Before doing the copy, set BOINC to suspended network and NNT, and that's pretty much all the precautions that you need. Before doing the copy, set BOINC to suspended network and NNT, and that's pretty much all the precautions that you need. I still (and every time this comes up) say that it's better to do things the other way round: 1) Restore the data 2) Install BOINC over the top, directing the installer to use the already loaded data folder. Saves cancelling the 'attach to a project' wizard every time, and allows the installer to set the folder permissions correctly. |

I can't remember if I had done it that way the last time around or not. Both methods do work since I have done both over the years. The less wizards and prompts, the better. Matt just posted in Tech News.... They are hoping if all goes well they may have everything from the failing Gowron copied onto Thumper by tomorrow. And if all goes really well, they may be able to restart the project running on Thumper after tomorrow's outage. Then they can proceed with the repair of Gowron in the background. Meow meow! Greetings, Greetings Cosmic, That sounds like an idea I had late last year when I was re-installing WinXP Pro, but for some reason didn't do it. I wasn't sure it would be prudent to do that. Now that I see it's done by you and perhaps many others as well, I guess I'll do the upgrade tomorrow. I'll just copy it to my data drive... Hmmm... That drive is the d:\ drive. I guess "d" is for data. Bah hahahaha! Never thought of it that way until now. Anyway, I'll copy the BOINC data to the d:\ drive and do as you recommended. Thanks Cosmic! :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Well one of my machines is now requesting CPU work from other projects and the other two will in a day or so if required (still have plenty of CUDA work yet though atm). Cheers. |

Matt just posted in Tech News.... Those guys have a constant stream of things to fix. In the private sector that could be considerd as job security. I wish them well, and I know they will get it all sorted out. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

Actually, not the case -- the composite President's day is set as the 3rd Monday of February -- as in next Monday. And in these days of out of money state budgets, things get shut down for a lot of reasons <smile>. It's also a holiday here in the US - not just Valentine's Day, but also the combination of George Washington's and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays that we call President's Day.
