Good Evening My Time.

Synergy is on its way and due to arrive Fridy the 8th of January.

Matt has promised that he would let me know of hardware requirements as the new servers are settled in.

Currently, Matt has stated that more 1Gig Drives might be necessary to resolve the Input/Output (I/O) bottleneck with the Master Science Database. I also know that several people have earmarked hardware donations for additional RAM for Synergy.

If someone wants I can explain what Matt is talking about with the I/O bottleneck.

Regards

Pappa

Edit:
Most have received a Donation Letter for Seti. Every Donation which is received by UCB tells them Seti is still working. It tells UCB, You a Seti User Cares. You Voice Counts!
Please keep the Donations going in.
Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project.

Pappa, Can we get an idea of where the hardware designated donations leftover(or deficit) currently stands?

From Matt's post, I am wondering if we need to focus towards server-sitting money(aka general SETI funds).

But the lab certainly needs a big enough kitty where they can buy a stack of drives, or memory, or cables, or routers, or replacement parts as well.

A bit of "Color" at this point would be helpful.

I would be glad to add the color, if I knew which exact color. So if everyone feels you need to add a bit of funds to the "hardware" coffer, I will not object. I do not know of reserves from the Initial Donations. The "class" of hardware which was purchased is not cheap (even with a discount on a good deal).

As the drives are headed for the HP Servers, Seti is required to purchase them from HP to be covered under the warranty. Then they are the same "approved" type. As this is not "Dogfooded" hardware, Seti has to follow rules to protect that warranty.

The HP Equipment has arrived and Seti is back in operation. A Team GPU Users Group took time to build a Third New Server. Which arrived Friday. It shows how dedicated Seti Users can accomplish many things.

So as Matt and Crew are tweaking things we are back in a holding pattern. It does not mean that other things are not needed. It means they are not defined yet.

When i look at the server status page i´m wondering about a RAM upgrade of some servers with low RAM usage.
Other hardware donations seems to be senseless until the needs aren´t exactly defined.

Keep up your great job.

I'm pretty jazzed about all the new equipment and have been waiting for a picture of, or news about, Synergy.

I know I didn't contribute to it, so it isn't like looking at my baby through the nursery's glass, but it would be like peering in on the newborn of a good friend.

Any chance anybody can get even a cell phone photo, or is there one somewhere that I've just missed?

There is a pic in the Tech News forum, under the thread title "Running up the hill". It is up and running, but is waiting on the RAM upgrade to show up within the next few days before it is configured and installed into the SETI closet.

Anything new on this front? It'd be nice to know what we could donate to help out.

Yes, an updated hardware requirements thread would be good. :)

I have noticed that the "Donate Hardware to SETI@home" has not been updated since December of 2008. We need to have this section updated with the latest and greatest of what is needed.

If we know what is needed, then all of us can help in a coordinated effort bring the best equipment to help this great program.

Bones-several people have asked for an updated list of hardware needs....we have yet to receive an answer.

Uli, with respect, your reply is...almost a put off to people who might have hardware resources to offer. Maybe if we were told what hardware was needed to fix "one problem at the time", we could help out.

It's not a put-off at all. In order for the SETI guys to determine what they need, they have to do quite a bit of work. For support see the two most recent threads by Matt in the Tech News Forum.

For example, they've currently put more RAM into Oscar. While more RAM always seems like a good idea, they've been working for over a week to date to determine if the new RAM is actually helping anything. That's $3300 retail worth of RAM.

When they need specific components, they'll let us know. For now, sending them a ton of random hardware won't really help a thing.

And as I can get that information....I shall pass it along.
