Over the weekend we "caught up" with workunit demand, given the low workunit limits that were set, so I set the limits to the effectively-infinitely-high setting. Of course, this was around the time the software blanking suite of programs needed to be kicked forward a couple times (we're not sure exactly why they hang - they just do). So we were low on raw data for a while there. You may notice a new addition to the server status page. Jeff has been folding his NTPCkr/RFI code into the BOINC management fold, so those processes are on the page now. They are currently running on maul, which is a compute server donated a while ago that's been working "behind the scenes." It's a nice system, but it loses contact with its keyboard more often than not - something weird about the USB bus. So the ability to login isn't guaranteed unless you ssh in. That alone is enough to make me insist it never rises above "compute server" status. We're also trying to max i/o on oscar in preparation for the big restripe project tomorrow. This is why the assimilators are currently off. We're doing a database backup today, then moving all the database files to carolyn tomorrow, and on Wednesday restriping oscar and moving the database files back. That's the plan, anyway - hopefully this will all be done by Thursday morning, which is when I'll try to start everything up again. - Matt -- BOINC/SETI@home network/web/science/development person -- "Any idiot can have a good idea. As usual, appreciate the news, Matt. Hope all goes smoothly during the transfers and re-striping of Oscar. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |

Thanks for the update Matt. Could you sometime give us the name of the server doing the RFI blanking of the raw data before it is broken up into WUs. Just for the fun of it after the last/third new server comes in it would be fun to have a list of all of them and what they do. I am curios to see how much bigger the iceberg is than what we normally see. |

I had made the suggestion a bit ago in another thread that it would be very helpful for some of us to understand how all of the servers in the Seti system work if somebody could come up with a nice little flow chart. I think it would open up some eyes as to just what is involved in getting the work from Aerecibo to us and back to Seti. Thanks for the update. I'm taking it that the boards will be down for an extended time while all this data movement takes place. |

It sounds like only the assimilation will be down. If I understand Matt correctly, the project will still be more or less online, the results just won't be assimilated into the Science DB. |
