heh, even as an incurable pessimist, I would have to say "at least we found them!" Janice |

Well, Server Status Page is dead since 2 hours. It shows 18:40:08 UTC, and that's 2 hours ago. Mine too! I love having a full cache to get through the rough spots. It's been so long since I had a full cache. Now, it really doesn't matter if there is a bump in the road. I can say that I have never seen so many AP units. I am guessing that with all of them I have crunched lately, I bet I still have at least 100 of them. As has been pointed out in other threads, the credit issued for an AP task is all over the place, but it doesn't matter because it's all science getting done. What ever the servers throw at me, I'll throw it back, but completed. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

The kitties have lots to nibble on, thanks to the extended uptime we have had as of late. The forums went totally dead, as did any other Berkeley access I had bookmarked, a short while ago. I am guessing something campuswide, rather that the Seti closet right now. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |

Server status page seems to be back now. I'm still downloading work, but can't upload. According to server status page ap_splitters are off but everything else is working. Cheers from down under |

I can only speak for myself when I say, I am here to try to find ET. If credits are all you are concerned with, this might not be the best project. If successful, we have something to tell grandchildren. If collatz is successful.. um.. what? Other projects have noble goals. Beyond how many credits they grant. As far as outtages, we are working together to try to help solve the issues that require them. I consider it "growing pains". Janice |

I assure you that credits are not my primary concern. Growing pains for an 11 year old project? C'mon... All I'm saying is that it MUST be possible to make this thing run better. I'll be the first to admit that I don't have a clue what it would take, but we've clearly got many knowledgeable people involved in this thing. You gotta remember, this project is run on a very limited shoe string budget. The latest 2 servers, plus the one that is being donated soon, are because of donations from USERS, not from funds from the University, or the state. Yes, they get grants every once in a while. SETI has surpassed its "living" years because of just those points stated. Many of the other projects you and others crunch don't have the same pains as this project. There is no problem running other projects, that is what BOINC was designed to do. You have crunchers that specifically crunch for only this project, which is perfectly fine, they believe in this project. There are others that crunch multiple projects because this project has its hiccups. |

That's because, as discussed elsewhere several times, the units took so long on the slower h/w of the time outages were not as noticable. Come on - the slightest bit of trouble & you moan. Get a cache - that way no productivity is lost :). The project is a lot better since we got the new servers! |

Ever since the first time I heard of Seti@Home I knew that it was going to be my computer that found THE SIGNAL. I still feel that way. I will crunch this project untill they shut the doors and turn off the servers, Or I die first. I crunch Milkyway and Einstien and both have had there share of mishaps. So if you want to leave,Im sorry to see you go. But that makes it better odds that I find the signal. Thanks. PS. Just these past few weeks have been a hell of a lot better than the last 4 months, Are you sure you really want to leave now?
Old James |

The way that I look at it is we are back to October. The servers go up and down all the time. The handling of work units is slow; for reasons of input or output take your pick. The whole time Seti does not report up to date totals outside of Seti. Seti hits my Fermi card hard, but does not give me credit for using it. It stays away from my i3-550 and reports little for it when it does use it. Other projects do not have the problems and report more credit for using your machine. My i3's RAC on Seti is 490 and on Einstein 2900. My Fermi has many backlogged WUs, but that machine's RAC is dropping. Seti is not giving it credit for WUs completed. They need to out source Seti IT! |

Despite a few hiccups...things seem to be getting better...I know there are crunchers who have more money to spend on hardware than this project does!...It's amazing to me what they can do at SETI@Home HQ with what they've got...This is the largest DC project in the world and it runs on a shoe string...But it despite the gloom and doom it does run...So i'm pleased the new servers are in place and hopefully over the next few weeks things will settle down to a manageable rumble. Your computers are hidden. Have you looked to see if fermi is completeing work units or trashing them? what version of boinc or op apps are you using? Do you even know? Seti has been running the best it ever has the last two weeks than in the last 4 months.
Old James |

Stats dumps i believe are done once a day, how are the offsite stats sites ever going to be more up to date? Can't help you if your computers are hidden. Claggy |

I too believe things are running at least somewhat better than they were a couple of months ago (November doesn't count). I'd say that this project runs on a 'relative' shoe string. At a guess, most (not all) projects have less resources to work with than SETI, but none are as large (by a fairly large margin). Given the various constraints, these days I tend to cut this project a fair amount of slack. Then again, given my nature, that means I often refrain from posting missives here. I am not as angry or frustrated as some users are, nor as 'everything is beautiful' as some other folks are. My own approach is support a LOT of other projects, that is especially so as I am very partial to ATI GPU's. Then again, adding the workload of handling ATI GPU's here doesn't make that much sense -- as there are clearly more than enough 'users' with clearly enough processing power for this project. Were that not the case, this project wouldn't have a planned half-week outage every week to process data and do 'other maintenance'. I guess for me, one of the frustrations I have is when the server status mismatches my close encounters with the SETI kind -- like at this moment, when the server status reports just about all 'green', yet uploads are either intentionally (I realize that sometimes that is the case) or unintentionally disabled. Things seem to be getting better...This is the largest DC project in the world and it runs on a shoe string...But despite the gloom and doom it does run...So i'm pleased the new servers are in place and hopefully over the next few weeks things will settle down to a manageable rumble. |

Earlier today, something caused the Berkeley system to go offline. Whatever it was must have done something to the SETI servers. I guess the boys will be in in the morning and give them a kick. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |
