Today we got carolyn up and running as a mysql replica - if all goes well both mork and carolyn will be replicating from the master database on jocelyn without hitch over the weekend. This will be a good "burn in" to prove that carolyn is handling the job, and we'll make it the master next week. Maybe. It is a short week due to the holiday, but then again we're being more aggressive than normal to push projects forward.

To answer some questions from yesterday's thread:

First and foremost, in that picture oscar is on top.

And that picture of the "old bruno" is not the "new bruno" which is still being used. The "new bruno" is actually the "old bambi" which is why you don't see bambi anymore on the server status page.

We did confirm with HP technician that, ventilation-wise, it is okay to stack these servers on top of each other. However, this is likely not to be their final resting place in the racks. We might clear up space in the middle rack where ther rails should work and put oscar there. Or install yet another shelf in the current rack if there's space.

Yeah, paypal is still not accepted by the University. This is completely out of our control. Despite major griping by us and other groups around campus, not to mention obvious benefits for using paypal for donations, there are various legal and bureaucratic reasons that make this a non-starter.

Those books in the background of that picture are actually a dictionary and thesaurus, neither of which have been actually cracked open in, I dunno, a decade?

You have to have something to block the doors open while carrying servers
into and out of the room.

And thanks for the update.

How are the RAIDs/MySQL configured? RAID10? Separate the indexes/journals off to another RAID?

Also, it would be cool to see bonnie++ stats for these machines, especially compared to thumper, or the new bruno, etc.

Having had some recent experience in endowment care funds under California law I might even be able to cite the specific sections of the California Probate Code that puts PayPal out of the possible running. There is a list of the types of things which the funds can be invested in. Private companies that look like a bank but aren't a bank are not eligible. Now if PayPal had FDIC or SIPC insurance I'm sure the lawyers for the Regents could find some loophole to get PayPal in. But as it stands now it is forbidden by California Statute.

But PM uli, she has ways.

I think I can be of some help here:

I hope this helps some. PayPal has been FDIC insured for a good while.

PayPal Agreement:
5.1 Balances. You do not need to maintain a Balance in your Account in order to make
payments. If you do hold a Balance, PayPal will hold your funds separate from its corporate
funds, will not use your funds for its operating expenses or any other corporate purposes and
will not voluntarily make your funds available to its creditors in the event of bankruptcy. While
your funds are in our custody, unless you enroll in the Money Market Fund sweep, PayPal will
combine your funds with the funds of other Users and place those Pooled Accounts in one or
more bank accounts in PayPal's name. Balances in U.S. Dollars that are held in Pooled
Accounts may be eligible for FDIC pass-through insurance.

5.2 Assignment of Interest to PayPal. You agree that you will not receive interest or other
earnings on the funds that PayPal handles as your agent and places in Pooled Accounts. In
consideration for your use of the PayPal Services, you irrevocably transfer and assign to PayPal
any ownership right that you may have in any interest that may accrue on funds held in
Pooled Accounts. This assignment applies only to interest earned on your funds, and nothing
in this Agreement grants PayPal any ownership right to the principal of the funds you
maintain with PayPal. In addition to or instead of earning interest on Pooled Accounts, PayPal
may receive a reduction in fees or expenses charged for banking services by the banks that
hold your funds.

Eligible investments of the endowment care trusts:
...
(3) Certificates of deposit or other interest-bearing accounts in any bank in
this state insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
...
In addition, the funds may be invested and reinvested and kept invested in
investments of the type and in the manner as provided in Part 4 (commencing
with Section 16000) of Division 9 of the Probate Code.

Unfortunately, to get the pass-through FDIC insurance -- note they say may not will -- you have to surrender the interest and the requirement for endowment care is to earn interest. The PayPay Money Market fund has no pass-through FDIC insurance so it also isn't an option. PayPay doesn't say they bank accounts will be in California banks either, which is a requirement. Also there is the question of the time period between PayPal's receipt of money and their investment in a bank account, and again upon withdrawal. This because PayPal is not a bank.

The main issue may not be FDIC but rather the fact that your agreement to accept funds from PayPal allows them to access your account and withdraw funds at their discretion. A friend has a small business that accepts PayPal and he keeps a separate bank account just for PayPay transactions which he checks daily and flushes any balance out of it into his business account.

It can be quite surprising when someone has paid you using PayPal and a couple of days after you ship product they place a claim with PayPal. PayPal will honor the claim without question and draw the money from your account. To get the money back you have to go through a rather lengthy process.

Oh, you suggest to retire another old machine from an important job? I think they will continue to rely on the Sun machine. It's rock-solid and heavier.

Is there an estimate as to when 1) the project will become viable again as it's been down for almost a month and 2) with an availability rate of greater than the current 40% which has rendered it basically unavailable?

regarding space between the servers:

HP rep is correct, it is not "required." But an inch or two does greatly reduce the heat transfer between the two servers. It gives a bit more forgiveness in less than ideal climate conditions which can occur.

Perhaps.

But the Murphy curse will happen. The moment the last person with the keys and alarm codes is on the way to the airport for the holiday the system will hiccup in such a way that it will require a person to flip a switch to bring it back up.

So I'd suggest after Thanksgiving might be a better time to go live. Of course that will just postpone Murphy until Christmas.

I have to agree ... after turkey day at least for turning the splitters back on.. to save the field calls until people have turkey sandwiches to take with 'em.
