Do I understand correctly: the entire project is effectively down (and this must be why I haven't received new tasks for weeks) ... is that right? If so, PLEASE stop "burying the lead" and have that information prominently featured on your main SETI page instead of making people go to so much trouble to get the information (and still not be sure about it). You go to server status page and it seems like most functions are up. Posts about "awaiting new servers" are ancient. Do a little basic PR people, or folks like me will just give up on you. Daily updates at the very least!

It is "prominently featured on your main SETI page":

News
...
The project is down while we remodel our database servers.

Have you even read the News on the front page? The issue has been posted since Oct 28.

Don't be so defensive, please. I was on no "high horse." Oct. 27, yes I saw and referenced that. Today is Nov. 17. I am asking for an update. What is so objectionable about this simple request? It would take as long to satisfy it as to give me a testy answer. Why is everyone on such a short fuse today?

Message 1049084 - Posted: 17 Nov 2010, 20:18:39 UTC - in response to Message 1049078.

First, I'm not being defensive. I just hate when people start throwing out demands and get pissy about lack of information without actually checking.

Second, if you're asking for an update - do so. Don't go on a rant about how news should be prominently put up on the front page when it's already there, or how people are "burying the lead" or daily updates being required. That's what I call a "high horse". If there had been something new to report since then, it would have been there. Daily updates are too much and unncessary. I would even say that they would become depressing if they have to repeat themselves every day about being down.

Third, your "simple" request was unncessary and quite snippy. We've been helping people by informing them of the servers being down, very patiently I might add, then we have a user like you that comes along and starts getting up in arms about a supposed lack of information.

Fourth, if you were just asking for an update, one was already given previously by John. You took it a step further and jumped on the opportunity to complain about a lack of information, which is clearly more than making a simple request. It was a rant, plain and simple.

The above are the reasons why people like me might sound testy. It's in the way you came across despite already being given the information you require.

Okay. I'll continue to be nice in spite of your first two responses. I've been a professional public information/interface guy all my professional life. Please -- PLEASE, for SETI's sake -- go ask a disinterested third party, who knows something about public relations, how keeping the public informed would best be handled: wasting time on back-and-forth forum postings or just regularly keeping people up-to-date on the homepage. And you might ask a disinterested third party about the nature of our exchange to date. Your people skills are somewhat unique in my experience.

The project told us about the down time on the front page and gave a time frame. It's quite useless to have daily updates that merely say "yep, still down, and another 29 days to go"; "Yep, still down, and another 28 days to go"; etc.

Updates can be found in the Technical News forum, or if that's too far for you, in the Technical News link from the front page (Menu bar, under About, 4th option down).

Now then, afaict, your first post in this thread wasn't friendly; Your second post in this thread wasn't friendly either. Perhaps I am reading them both wrong, and were they posted in the "new US friendliness style", in which case I apologize. I'm Dutch. :-)

Your entire response does not address or deny the fact that you were on a rant about SETI's PR, which validates my entire argument above in that you try to mask your rant as a "simple request" when in fact it was not.

I do not need a lecture about PR, nor does your observation of my people skills matter to me. You've only seen a glimpse of me. Albeit a bad glimpse, but I've already explained to you why you received such a terse reply from me. Attempting to attack my personal skills still in no way excuses your misguided public rant. I would suggest that if you have a difficult time dealing with people who respond negatively to your rants, that you should take responsibility for your rants instead of making it appear that they are the problem.

In fact, I could make a similar observation of your posting here ranting to volunteers who spend their free time helping people, in having to deal with people who tend to rant and then blame them when they respond in kind. What does that say about your people skills, despite sounding all professional about it?

If you expect that someone working in SETI lab (~3 "workers") will read our posts here
it is highly improbable.

You are just talking to people from all over the world as you can see by the flags under the user names.
We are like you - just SETI "users" who are more informed because we often read the forums.

I am wondering what is happening here. I know about the work that was going on with the servers and the transitioning to the new boxes and that did prevent slow down the downloads and uploads of jobs. While this was going on though, I was still able to get a few jobs and upload completed work. What I am wondering is why I haven't had a job to work on since Nov 12 and every time that I update the project it comes back telling me that there are no new jobs. This has been happening on an hourly basis for 16 days to this point. When can I expect to receive new jobs to work on?

They've kept the uploads turned on so as to clear out some of the old outstanding work which explains why you're still able to return work.

The jobs you've received since the servers have been off on Oct 28th are re-sends; timeouts from another user's account that the never completed (and were more than likely ghost tasks - tasks that the server thought were sent to the client but never made it and hence have to time out). At this point, no new work is being generated until the servers are ready.

They estimate that the servers should be up in about a week and a half or so.

This thread is rather ancient history, and your question is very unclear. Please start a new thread and rephrase your question a bit.
