The machine that was running the main BOINC database has become too unreliable to use. The backup server does not have the capacity to run the project on its own.

The very good news is that we just ordered two new servers! One will be the new BOINC database server and the other will be the new back end science database server. Our capacity to both distribute and analyze our data will increase significantly with these new machines.

While we prepare for these new servers and get them going once they arrive, the project will be down. Although no new work will be distributed, all outstanding work will be uploaded and credited. This web site and the forums will remain up for most of the remodeling period.

Funding for the new servers has come entirely from very generous donations from the SETI@Home community.

I understand the need to replace the unreliable servers. Hopefully, that will fix all the recent outages (in the last few months). Thank you for the post.

Query: Can you give us a time schedule when the new BOINC server and the new backup server will be online? Several days? :) Weeks? :| Worse? :(

Tnx,
Al

Thank you for all your hard work. Hope you can get some backend work done before the new servers come in.

How long will run the scheduler for report?
I have still fresh WUs for 2 or 3 days on my 940 BE (this were/are hundreds of rescheduled VLAR GPU WUs).

While we are bugging you, will the tasks and pendings be brought back so we can check them?

Delivery of the servers has been quoted as about two weeks. They then need to be installed, configured, tested, loaded with data, tested some more, etc. - could take several days or a few weeks depending on how big the set-up job is and whether there are any teething problems.

So, sometime in the second half of November is my guesstimate.

Edit: Post from Jeff in Technical News confirms the longer end of my guestimate:

The time line we are looking at is about one month - two weeks for the servers to arrive and another two to get them going. We'll see as time goes on whether or not that's too aggressive.

Stats site - http://www.teamocuk.co.uk - still alive and (just about) kicking.

Glad to read that the new servers are coming soon.
Let's ALL be patient and let the people do their work without any pressure. There are other projects for data-crunching,
so ones computer still can be useful and productive. ;-D

I for one say its great news. Got rid of all my uploads. Will get rid of all ghosts and pendings.

Take how ever long you need to set up the new servers. I will be waiting:)

I guess getting a months worth of tasks would be too much...

Does this really mean no work at all for a month?

I can't wait for things to get back to normal where getting work without limits comes back.
I was able to get 40 task limit last week and that was gone in a day so now this machine is sitting doing nothing for a week already.

Let us at least get a couple weeks of work in a cache so that we don't have all this cpu power going to waste over the next month while we wait for new machines to come.

Just a thought!!!!

I used to be Seti only, but have changed my thinking. Once my Beta WUs clear, I am a happy camper.

Great news regarding new servers. I'm all for taking as long as needed to set up new servers.

Could be an idea to turn on the download server(s) to clear the 608,493 & 15,920 ap results showing as ready to send then only allow uploads. Just a suggestion Numbers were taken at 29 Oct 2010 4:30:05

Would be interesting to see if it's possible to return 2,708,376 & 51,336 ap results in 2 weeks. (Results waiting to be returned are without including the ready to send ones)

?

All WUs which are still/the results which will be in my BOINC will be ULed/reported.

Or for whom was this question? ;-)

EDIT: ..because of you pressed 'Reply' to my message.
Now I see your message wasn't for me, the task and pending credit list overviews aren't available. ;-)

BUT it's ALWAYS down?... Tuesday---Sunday?...
Got all my Machines sitting and Waiting for Tasks, and the answer is:

Project has NO Tasks..

I Like to Help, and have for YEARS now, But this is crazy..
I Run SETI 100%, and half the time I either have a Machine Hang, or NO server with Tasks?
