Message 1044529 - Posted: 28 Oct 2010, 21:49:45 UTC

We've decided to keep the project down until the new servers are up and running and the databases migrated to them.

The forums will stay up.

The back end and the upload server will stay up until we clear the outstanding results.

The time line we are looking at is about one month - two weeks for the servers to arrive and another two to get them going. We'll see as time goes on whether or not that's too aggressive.

The down time will be used for preparing the databases for migration. For example, on the science side, we can finally finish a big merge of the spike table and drop the old spike table. This will make the database smaller and easier to migrate.

We will also use the time for science processing and analysis.

More later...

Thanks Jeff,
Sorry we wont get new work for awhile but at least we will have the forums. Here's hoping for a smooth transition and many more work units to crunch in the future.

Best post something about that in the front page news as well. But good decision.
Let the grumbling commence. :D

No grumbling for this cruncher! Thank you for the update, and we will be here ready to crunch when the new servers are ready. You guys made an excellent decision!

Thanks for the update Jeff,

What will happen about Ghost Wu's?, will resends still happen?
if you can clear them it'll help shrink the database no end,

(i have tended to connect only when the servers aren't really busy,
and what ghosts i did have, i've managed to get resent)

Jeff, thanks for the news!

BTW. I have still a few fresh/and crunched WUs in BOINC. The earliest deadline is the 06. Nov.
Maybe it's possible to let run sometimes the scheduler for report?

Or you will extend the deadlines?

Yay, uploads completed and reported. I'm a happy cruncher again, and will be happier still once SETI resumes ^_^

@Sutaru: reporting works now

If you guys can get the scheduler and a download server going WITHOUT splitters,
we should be able to really clean up the mess.

I would love to make this as painless as possible for the lab.

Not being sure how the backend is run, is it possible to split loads and loads of work while the new servers are being configured and run-in?

Then there would be tons of work just waiting when the project comes back up, and we would all be waiting in the queue for our share.

Is that possible? Or is everything too dependent on everything else to do that?

Will we be able to monitor our tasks pages during this time, or is that operation too strenuous on the database? It's not really all that important, but I know curiosity of how many tasks are still lingering will be bugging a decent handful of people (yes, me included :p ).

I understand if that won't/can't be turned on, but it would be nice.

Excellent news, Rampage and Fury will be ready to go once you have everything in the green! Much needed break for my poor little server lol.

...

As some of those tasks have deadlines well into December, not all can be cleared within a reasonable time. Systems doing many projects can sometimes get into a mode where work gets done EDF and barely within deadline, and of course there are at least a few systems which need nearly all the allowed time to complete tasks. Do the best you can, most users are realistic and don't expect perfection.

If there's a possibility of getting the SETI Beta servers up enough to allow uploads and reporting similar to the main project, many participants there would be grateful.

I figure they'd just watch the server stats, and when "Results out in the field" reaches 0, they can feel safe turning it off.

I don't believe that the ghosts out in the field will allow a 0 result too soon until last one times out unless EVERYBODY does a detach/re-attach once they've run out of work will help (wishful thinking, I know).

Cheers. :)

Thanks Jeff for the update.

One question though.... While all of this is going on is it possible to do the same with the beta database, so that we can report those WUs?

Good luck with the new servers. Hopfully they will play nice. If not send them my way have a big hammer for configuring servers :)

Keep us posted!
