Klaatu was Michael Rennie's character's name. Perhaps you should review the movie again. He was the voice of reason and concern. I vote Klaatu. OK you right' But what was the command he sent to gort I still vote for the machine |

From Wikipedia - "Klaatu barada nikto" is a phrase originating from the 1951 science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still. "Klaatu" is the name of the humanoid alien protagonist in the film. Klaatu (Michael Rennie) commanded Helen Benson (Patricia Neal) that, were anything to happen to him, she must utter the phrase to the robot Gort. In response, Gort relented from destroying the Earth and resurrected Klaatu from death. |

J. Mileski: Anise was HOT... not quite a feature we want in a server occupying a broom closet with finicky AC. That is fitting, the computer I named Anise was known to run very hot, to the point of being unstable. reciently I reassembled the computer, the only change, I added an aftermarket CPU cooler. Where I was having low to mid 70's CPU temps, The new cooler is keeping it to less than 60°C |

What Helen actually said to Gort was "Gort, Klaatu barada nikto" - she prefaced the command she had rote-learned from Klaatu with Gort's name. The author did not invent a whole language or even give a translation of the phrase, so all attempts at a meaningful translation are guesswork, some of it very scholarly, but still guesswork. What is certain is that Klaatu is the apellation of the lead character, played by Michael Rennie, both from the dialog and from the scripts themselves. We have to assume that Gort is pretty bright, clever enough to know that the command is not being given by Klaatu him(it?)self and so is not likely to be a simple shutdown code. Also that by the time Klaatu gave the phrase to Helen, I think he had assessed the weapons technology of Earth and knew that it could not permanently harm him. So, piling Pelion on Ossa, I make the guess that the phrase means "Klaatu has been damaged. Recover and revive" - which has the gratifying side-effect of halting Gort's otherwise justifiable ire at the bald pink monkeys. |

Homer & Marge Yeah I know it's not sci-fi related, but I think Homers "DOH!" is highly relevant. lol SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

If we're looking for female sci-fi names then there's none finer than Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy. |
