The good news is that forums are up and the projects will be up soon.

The bad news is that the work limits will be quite restrictive for a while. This is because we swapped the boinc mysql db master and replica servers. The master had been mork and mork has just become too unreliable The new master is jocelyn and it has less than half the memory of mork.

The good news is that the bad news is temporary, because yesterday we ordered a new mork! It should be here in a couple of weeks. Details on this will follow. BTW, we also ordered the new science db server!

We'll have to feel out the outage schedule over the next few weeks. Thank you for your amazing support and your patience.

I think we should have a funeral for Mork when the new Mork gets here. He's been used and abused for a long time and deserves a nice send off.

Thanks for the update Jeff. Hope the hard work and bailing wire hold together as we startup this time.

Jeff thanks for the update. We know that one of the new servers will be Oscar and Mork has been such a hard and valued worker though these many years that I think he should be the sire of the newest addition to the Seti family and his name carried forth, say as in MorkII?

Hello:

I was a classic SETI@home guy (45,000 hours) from 2001 until they started BOINC, which i didn't like.

I have been offline for many years, but recently rejoined a week or so ago.

I have been without tasks for days now.

I see there is a server issue.

Hope you have it up soon.

The good news...

The bad news is that the work limits will be quite restrictive for a while.

Jeff, when you say "work limits", what exactly are you planning?

If it's the 'work in progress' you've been fine tuning over the last few months, are you aware that it could make the problem even worse?

Recent BOINC clients are designed to back off, and not keep pestering the server, if a scheduler request for more work doesn't get an allocation of work - for whatever reason.

BUT.... that backoff is set to zero every time a task completes. Hosts fitted with multiple CUDA cards can, in the worst case, finish a task every couple of minutes or so. With 'in progress' limits set, these hosts will be sending work requests almost constantly.

To protect Jocelyn, it might be better to increase the minimum time between scheduler contacts. That delay is surrently set at 11 seconds: I think it might be better to increase it to 5 or 10 minutes while Jocelyn is shouldering the burden alone.

I think the config setting is <min_sendwork_interval>, but you'll know better. Because it's a server limit, it isn't reset by the client on task completion.

I have to agree.. Mork deserves a wake when he is returned to Ork.

The name MORK needs to be retired with honors having served with such due diligence for almost 10 years now, and a permanent "plaque" commemorating his service and albiet, sacrifice, permanently posted in a "R-I-P" frame on the homepage. The new one being the "youngster" in the family should be named "MORK-JR. Likewise, his "birth certificate" should be posted for awhile on the homepage listing his "vitals" and parents. (would that make MINDY a mother now?)
I can see that the temporary fix had at least a momentary connection, because one of my computers started a WU download and is now "pending" at just under a percent. Maybe one of these days I'll hit jackpot on the Florida lotto and we can replace all the old ones with new ones named after all the tele-tubbies!

AH! I remembered that Jonathan Winters played the role but couldn't recall the character's name. The new machince should be Mearth or, if not that, then wasn't there a character that Mork reported in to on Ork? (Like the Big Talking Head on 3rd Rock).

As for Mork, salvage anything in the way of usable parts (like memory) then have a wake for it. Prior to the wake, you could auction off some number of chances to take one swipe at what's left of Mork with a sledgehammer. For those able to get to Berkeley, they could celebrate, vent and raise more money for SETI.
