I Have chosen to make the move to Linux after many years of considering it. I'll probably get mandrake. Anyways, is the Linux BOINC much faster with the SETI WUs? Does anyone know?
Join "Firefox Rocks!" - The SETI Team |

I think linux is faster. I have 11 machines crunching. my pentium 4 1.5ghz pc running linux is faster than my pentium 4 1.5ghz pc running windows 2000, by a huge amount. However, with older machines, I have 2 500mhz pentium 3's, the windows machine is just slightly faster, not by much though. If the linux source code was recompiled back to a x586, the linux 500mhz would likely be faster. The linux binary is currently compiled for x686 |

linux is faster at the moment because seti 4.02 does not have this "time-bug". with an optimized version of boinc you will get good benchmark results and higher claimed credits than with the original version.

Well, my experience is that W2k and XP is faster than Linux (at least with the 4.02 client, 4.05 under Windows takes muuuuuch longer to finish) Maybe this is helpful for you: Linux (Gentoo, Kernel 2.6.x, Athlon XP 1800) - WU time about 4h40 W2k (Athlon XP 2600) - WU time about 3h10 (with client 4.02, 4.05 takes about 5-6 hours) Win XP is about the same as W2K, WUs are finished a few minutes faster scsimodo |
