Other hardware needs are on the horizon. I am not concerned about what else they decide they need, and I suspect they will keep us posted. I did not see the final bill on the first two(let alone wages). Hopefully they have a good start for what is next.

I still suspect Jocelyn will not be able to keep up with Carolyn, but that is pure speculation.

Rack are racks and I don't care which ones you use or buy you are always faced with having to fight to get things mounted. (I speak from lots of experience.) Usually it isn't the rack unless it is too deep (need slide extenders) or too shallow (slides stick out the back and gouge you when you walk by). The biggest grief is that the rack slides and their mounting hardware are just not well thought out. Except for a case when a rack is just falling apart (or you need to impress the management), the money is better spent elsewhere.

Actually the problem is the racks are standard (19" or 21") but the equipment that goes into them isn't. Particularly computer equipment.

I believe you, but that seems pretty silly on the industries part. Imagine if each mfg had their own idea as to how to mount their 3.5" or 5.25" drives in a computer (no, Our drives will be 2.75" and 4.375", because we said so), or video/sound card makers said my card is Ultra height you need to expand your case 1" above a standard mount to make it fit. We sure wouldn't be where we are today. But them, maybe they are being like Dell, if you want our products, and want parts to fit in it properly with no case rework (motherboards for example used to be famous for this) you have to buy them from Us! The heck with industry standards. Oh well, whatcha gonna do? :)

They all deliberately impose their own variations for as far as they believe they will get away with it. It's an often used 'anti-competitive' trick that is far too often used... Also comes under the description of "vendor lock-in".

Some computer software and hardware companies have taken that Marketing trick to extremes, all to our cost...

No not asking for a refund. I'm wondering since there was a focus on ordering these two servers-is to see what the focus will shift to next. Whether it be another specific server or more general needs

Blurf, my view is these drives were primarily to give the tools the seti lab needed to do the work. They were small enough to be manageable(although with some strain to some.. more to others) yet large enough to get them some tools to keep things rolling. They were not meant to nor could they fund the manpower required, but I personally do not object if some was used towards funding the installation/movement work. To fund the entire project.. Well just plain beyond our abilities. But it seems to be making a difference.

When I worked in telecommunications, and budgets were tight, we could not get things like batteries for pagers. This resulted in hours of wasted time, very angry management demanding to know WHY we could not be reached.. and then stomping off in a huff because they did not like the answer "because you never got me the single battery for my pager I told you I needed 2 weeks ago".

A few bucks for the tools can make a lot of difference in the amount of work required. And hopefully they have that. If there is enough to start another server, or buff out the GPU users group server, or add a spare AC unit.. or or or or or....

In any case, As long as we can be spared being a testbed for BOINC (c'mon already, we did our part to get it rolling) there are improvements in this. This fund drive is winding down. There may be others in the future. But
everyone that has stepped up, large and small.. AWESOME JOB!!

Yes, it would be nice if there was Seti@Home wish list that was kept current posted SOMEWHERE around here. I know that they have said they have an ongoing requirement for hard drives. I've asked about specifics such as size, buss type, etc. but never have seen a reply. I'd hate to send them some hardware that they have no use for.
