Uli, who was doing the updates, had a very good friend pass away. She is packing for a trip for the funeral so probably wont be able to update for us.

Some snippage.

The problem is that all donations need to be approved by Berkeley first, and they take their cut of all donations, including the ones given by everyone here.

Far easier to come up with the cold, hard cash than it is to dance with the red tape at the University.

If you happen to know, just how much of a donation does Berkeley rake off the top?

$10,772.00 minus 11%(1184.92) is $9,587.08 of course.

For the people that have donated or contemplating a donation. Some companies will match employees donations to worthwhile causes. If you happen to work for such a company, see if Seti@home qualifies for matching funds from them.

Is there a legal way to get around that? If Seti@home wanted to use my donation for rent and utilities, so be it. That Berkeley automatically takes 11% off the top is a bit disturbing to me.

Hi Guys, every bit helps so here is mine :)

11% off the top is much easier to compute than trying to account and prorate actual expenses. Especially at the ratio of donations to actual expenses.

Honestly if they paid actual utility usage, the project would probably have been closed long ago. They are part of the University of California, Berkley. As such it is considered an educational/research venture. 11% puts them way ahead of the game, although if they could arrange for an actual room instead of the closet, maybe with an outside wall to vent heat through... Well I can dream. But in my opinion they got a good deal.

Updated my Stargazers Lounge Forum post with:

"Come on people - $10 is not much, barely a round of drinks for a Scotsman like me

It is easy to donate if you are a SETI@Home SGL Team member, or if you are not. It is secure and takes VISA and Mastercard.

But even if all you can do is join SETI@Home and do some data crunching in the background when your PC is on, you are helping the hunt for ET.

Thanks for reading this.

Tom"

Hope it helps, my own paltry donation is starting to embarass me, so I may chip in another $25 myself.

Okay, I said I would donate a second time to this cause. My two donations are still a lot less than the single donation of many though. But as the cost of my new 14" Dobsonian 'scope was just reduced and the vendor will refund me the difference, part of it can go here.

Well I am pretty sure Uli has her mind elsewhere for a bit. But we of the cheap seats are taking you at your word, and saying thank you!
there might be some exchange rate confusion getting the auto-response, but
once we get someone project related in here, I am sure they can validate it.
I have gotten an e-mail response for each donation I have made. It offers to
send postal mail with the same info on the form.
