Wow, when I lived in Albuquerque, I thot it was SO far away! Look on this map. See Interstate 25, north of VLA? I live between Rio Communities & Veguita, RIGHT on the highway! Think I'll hitch hike down there one day! I've been there once before. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&expIds=17259,25907,26714,26781,26799,26894&sugexp=ldymls&tok=QcVFvQAwSkt-IyWe4TFCsA&xhr=t&q=%22Very+Large+Array%22+%2Bmap&cp=23&client=firefox-a&hs=Jo&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love. Of course, the really cool bit is actually here. Make sure to switch to the "Satellite" view if it doesn't come up that way. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=34.078749,-107.618283&ie=UTF8&ll=34.078749,-107.618283&spn=0.028223,0.055747&z=15 -Steve P.S. I live in Oklahoma City and was planning to drive up to Montrose Colorado for the weekend. But I may do Socorro instead. Thanks for pointing it out! |

The visitors center is one of these buildings. Which are about 60 miles farther away. A bit too far to hike in one day. BOINC WIKI |

Damn! The visitors' center is too far to hitch hike! I hitch to albuquerque 1x/mo for groceries. and it takes all day and I come home thrashed. I'm SO BUMMED! In the evenings, I sit on my front porch to watch sun set & Venus rise and tonight, Jupiter was OUTRAGEOUS, as was the last full moon. Anyway, I look toward the south east and remind myself, "VLA is down there, somewhere..." I'm so rural, I can see the whole Milky Way most nights...it's breath taking. And all my neighbors are inside, watching tv, drinking beer and fighting, under this make you cry planetarium of real life, and never see any of it. Of course, if you get a ride, it is likely to take you all the way there. Same for the way back. Please note the word IF and the long stretch of not much between the VLA and Socoro. BOINC WIKI |

u sound suspiciously like a person who's been down there. I know some of that road pretty well. used to live in Ft. Sumner and took sixty to Albuquerque occasionally. There's a lot down there; jack rabbits, sunflowers, red winged blackbirds, lizards, snakes, cholla cactus, antelope and cranes, on occasion. just not many cars. same prob up here; if I'm not on the highway by 8am with my thumb out to catch a commuter, I'll stand on that asphalt for hours waiting for someone to pass, anyone! I was kinda bummed w/Contact, cuz it capitulated to "believers." I liked the book much better. But Sagan had just died, and he's my Unka Carl; he taught me how to think. And Jodie Foster's in it, and I've had a stone crush on her for a long time. That Matthew Mcwhatever is a waste of time. BUT local (and only Native American) news anchor, Conroy Chino played a reporter! That was cute! I also didn't like that Ellie went alone. I liked the multinational part of the book a LOT! and the computations of pi, but I guess they thought that would be too taxing on the audience? I wish they wouldn't assume audiences are stupid. Write the movie for US, darn it, and the audience will catch up! if we are alone, seems like an awful waste of space.... For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.
