Hello Friends!

Welcome to the sixth installment of the Critter Cafe. This is a place where critter-people gather to talk about whatever they wish to discuss. Non-critter people are welcome as well. There is no such thing as "off topic" in the Critter Cafe. To start things off, let me share some recent family photos...

Here is my bad boy, Artie. In this shot he is nibbling on a bit of cat food instead of nibbling on Eric's toes!

Here are all four of the "babies", but really they should probably be classified as "juveniles" at this point. Please don't ask me who is who!!! Rufus is the largest and he has a magnificently long tail. Artemus, Izzy and Spirit have definite personality quirks that make them easy to identify in-person, but not in still photos. I THINK we're looking, from left to right, at Atemus Jeffrey, Rufus Jeffrey, Izzy Jeffrey and Spirit Jeffrey, but I am not 100% sure.

It will not be long now before the "babies" leave mama, one by one, to establish their own territories.
This may be the last family photo we get of the four of them all together. (Eric can't wait!!!)

Paul a Friend of mine had a pet raccoon once that liked my diamond earring and one night at a party he party he grabbed it and pulled it out of my ear from behind.(And it hurt!)
When he found where "Coony" had stashed it He found a whole lot of "Shiny things" that had turned up missing. 8-)
I'll ask him if he still has any pics of him.

Typically not. All the territories close by seem to be well defended by others. Once the babies leave mama we don't see them again, with a few exceptions. Twosie and Threesie were members of an old litter. Arthur may be a baby from several litters ago, but now that he is a big rangy adult we can't figure out what former baby he might have been.

Since I identify most raccoons by behavior and the relationships they have with their siblings (and not so much by appearance), once they are out of their litters and gone for a few months it is hard to recognize them if they return. Even those few identified by appearance have that change over time. Rufus might be hard to recognize if he goes away for 6 months and then comes back, even though now he is the easiest to identify by appearance.

Interloper Mama's territory is clearly nearby, as she returns each year. I don't know who got Old Threesie's territory after she passed away. Our adult regulars these days are Interloper Mama, Arthur and occasionally Cilantro. IM has very puffy fuzzy forearms, Arthur has a tiny head and a big body and Cilantro is ENORMOUS all over, with a particularly big head. Old Threesie we used to identify more by behavior, although Eric also used to count the notches in one of her ears (love bites...) to make sure it was her.

Maybe you should try ear tags. Or spray paint.

Thanks Angela. Why not write a paper chronicling your experience over the years. It would be quite interesting. Just a thought.

I kinda wish that worked for cats too. Our colony just seems to keep on getting bigger. We recently had another one of our cats come in with two kittens. It's interesting since she's already had her little trip to the vet. Don't know who she stole them from. She first brought three in but one of them must have made it back to it's real mother. Whoever they belonged to she is taking very good care of them.

My dad had some cousins that had a Raccoon the rescued as an infant. The raccoon liked to play on the screen door. The fun was to climb half way up the door, grip the screen with the claws on one side and push withe the paws on the other side (SLAM...SLAM...SLAM... repeat for several hours).
