Ghosts are starting to get way out of control around here. Seems like every server run creates a whole slew of new Ghosts.

Almost 50% of the Work Units the scheduler has assigned to me have become ghosts because I did not receive the scheduler request/response.

To make it quicker and easier to figure out how big my Ghost Army has become I decided to write a simple little application.

Its very easy to use so I thought I'd share it with my fellow SETIzens.

If you are interested, you can download it from http://netfolder.in/folder.php?folder_id=iPe7n5V, there you will find 2 Zip files.

Most people will only need the the smaller Zip file which just contains the application and its documentation.

Anyone who is having trouble getting it to run should try the larger Zip file which contains a full installer and should solve any problems.

Other than the hoops you have to jump through to actually download, I got it just fine.

Version 1.02 should work a little better, it also automatically detects all BOINC projects.

New Host, less hoops so easier to download from. You will find any and all new versions there.
http://www.mediafire.com/?yyy64lh5953d7

Please download and use the installer if you are having trouble getting it to run.

Once you have used the installer please update to the latest version.

The new host should be easier to download from [B^S] madmac.

Sorry about that arkayn.
I've tried it under Win 7 32 bit.
Could you please try installer then update to the new version? Please post the error message if you still get one.

Its a common problem for an app made from vs6 when its packed for distribution - lots of missing pieces.

The installer supplies the "missing pieces" for those that don't have them already X-Files 27.

Thanks for the extra info arkayn. That was a bug with the 1.00 and 1.01 versions, v1.02 should not suffer from that any more.

Most odd, is it displaying v1.02 in its title bar?

If it's not then please extract the contents of the GhostDet v1.02.zip file into the folder that you installed it to.

Works on my Win7 x64.

Downloaded the small zip and ran it, got error message that Mshflxgd.ocx was missing. I then downloaded the big zip file and extracted that file into the folder and all is OK.

Haven't tried the new 1.02 but the original worked fine for me from the installer on Vista.

Ok, uninstalled V1.00 and installed v1.02. No problem except it seems to think I have 1 ghost. The old one showed that way too. Not sure why.

No missing files.

Says I have 10 ghosts, am I missing something, what do I do now that I know I have them?

Do know that this application uses page scraping, which adds extra load to the database, which in turn could lead to it crashing. This can lead to your IP address being blocked if you use it too often.

I wouldn't do anything, they will be crunched by others once they time out.

Does it add extra load in comparison to when you check for ghosts manually?

Yes, as your browser doesn't check all the pages of your work simultaneously. This app does.

From Matt Lebofsky, January 16 2008
In other news, it seems the every day there's a different reason our web sites are so darn slow. Yesterday afternoon we were getting hit by some seemingly nefarious activity which I was able to block quite easily once I discovered it. But we were also getting hit by some scraping of stats pages via a robot (called BoincBot) that was not obeying robots.txt. I blocked these hits as well. We don't allow such activity on our web sites. If you want BOINC stats you can download the daily xml dumps just like everybody else.

A Binary search algorithm with a 1,000 Work Unit step interval is used to determine the number
of In Progress Work Units. It typically only needs to make between six and ten page requests.

This routine would be very kind to the data base compared to a manual search.

hmm

not sure i agree as if you have tens of pages of tasks then it would have to go through every page to find all the names of the wu list to then compare against your local wu

unless there is another way to query the task list that i am not aware of?

as it does the checking automatically its going to hit the server hard with multiple requests etc

{edit} - actually if it does not have away of fixing the ghosts then there is not much point finding out - could put the server under unnecessary load especially if large numbers of crunchers all start using it!
