I just sent Eric an email asking for an update.

I will relay any news I get if he does not post it himself.

I am excited about getting the new box up and running too.

Don't have a time estimate, but the specs of the new server have been decided.

I guess it'll be a while before it's commissioned - it ought to have a couple weeks of soaking to find anything vulnerable before it goes live.

We're still trying to nail down the exact specs of the new science database server - Jeff has been doing some additional research regarding CPU upgrades - but that'll get purchased really really soon I swear.

Matt just posted a bit more in Technical News. It still does not get a firm date. However since Berkley still has not cashed the check I dropped off(I am informed it has made it through the SETI portion and into UCB proper) I suspect things will move a bit slowly.

They are back at the drawing board on WHAT to order. But it looks like they should not have any more price gaps.

My estimate: order next week, take 1-3 weeks to assemble/ship, then 1 week of testing/OS/configuration before it's a useful system. So, to be safe, 3 to 4 weeks.

I know we're anxious to see happy progress from this burst of generosity, and we certainly will before you know it. Still, if this kind of time line seems slow to you, let me point out that I have files in my home directory from unfinished projects (that I'd like to get wrapped up at some point) with last-modified date stamps from the 1990's.

Thanks Matt,
I think most of us who post here fully understand.

LOL. I throw those out after 10 years Matt. If it is really important, somebody will ask.
