Message 1028785 - Posted: 27 Aug 2010, 0:53:05 UTC - in response to Message 1028783.

That's cool. I have never seen a mountain lion, but when I was in high school, I snuck out one night, and went wandering in the woods. I had a flash light with me, and that was about it. I heard what I thought was a bobcat several hundred yards off, and I set out to find it. Eventually I could see some ruffled leaves on the ground where I thought it might have passed, and then I saw a clear foot print. I looked around a bit and didn't see anything. Then I heard a low growl, and I turned my flash light into a tree about 20 feet from me. There was a bobcat about half way up the tree, staring down at me. I watched him for about 30 minutes, and then quietly left. I remember that very clearly all these years later.

I stalked a porqupine around the same time frame, but it was during the day. He was also half way up a tree. I just watched him for a while and left him alone.

Steve

I have seen one on my parents back porch a few decades ago.

But instead of surrendering, he made a charge at one of the police officers on the scene. The officer got a round off from his 12 gauge shotgun striking the cat in the left leg, and stopping it's advance.

Ahem...
I forgot to mention that in the battle, the big cat took a couple bites of police officer Roy Smith's shoes.
Later that year, when officer Smith and his wife visited the zoo, she was heard asking him.... "Pardon me Roy, is that the cat that chewed your new shoes?"

We get reports of "big cats" around my end of London every few years. No photos or footprints yet, but several reliable and consistant eye witness reports. Current thinking is that is probably an escaped pet, since there has not been anything bigger than bobcats native around here for over 100 years, and even the bobcats are scarce near a big city.

I see so much wildlife on TV, that I really appreciate what I am fortunate to see first hand. We get a lot of deer, skunks, foxes, chickens, pheasants, turkeys in our yard, but seeing a mountain lion would be awesome. I have not seen, but heard very close a bear. My sister and I were about 30 to 40 feet from what we were certain was a bear, but we couldn't see it through the thicket when we were walking in the woods several years ago. I had pepper spray, but we went the other way, rather than risk a confrontation.

Grace has had Her dinner from a 40 year old bowl made in Japan and Me? I had mine and then promptly did something stupid, My small toe ran into one of the TV table legs, Now that hurt and It's the 2nd time today too. But the pain is going away, yeah I walked It off, No choice and no cus words were uttered either, But I was a bit louder than usual...

You're a better man than I am, Victor! When i do something like that the cats instantly scatter in all directions, anticipating the loud and long string of expletives they know I'm about to emit.

Oh no! I have done that, and did utter a four letter word or two. I know what you mean when it happens twice in one day too! I'm very glad Grace has been able to share her life with you. Cats don't always listen to directions, but they are there for you. You're lucky as since you only have one cat, you know which one did it when something gets tipped over or scratched up.

Vic, please stop. You made a commitment and I know it is not easy, but she is not Angel and should excist in her own right. The first time Tessie saw Chrismas lights, she tried very hard to commit suicide.
Just be glad you don't have to potty train six puppies at the same time. That was fun :) and it was done without cussing, just a lot of love and patience.

Hi Friends!

Steve - wonderful turtle and turkey pictures, thank you.

Re: mountain lions, we have some pretty good sized parks full of pretty good sized deer in the SF Bay Area and we definitely still have a few pretty good sized cats around. There was one particular mountain lion who used to sun herself with regularity on a golf course in the Oakland Hills. Also, once a decade or so, one of the kitties gets a jogger. In my mind these are all good reasons for not golfing or jogging or doing exercise of any sort. Why I wouldn't even risk getting on a treadmill in a gym. You never know where a window might be open!!! Best to stay at home and eat bon-bons in front of the television, I always say.

Re: cussing... well... from time to time I try some new and exceedingly challenging recipe and then when things inevitably go really, really wrong, Eric wonders what in the world a band of drunken sailors out on shore leave is doing in our kitchen. Bless that man for overlooking my little foibles.

Baby tiger found drugged and stuffed in bag at Thai airport

Thai veterinarian Phimchanok Srongmongkul holds a baby tiger cub after feeding at the Wildlife Health Unit at the Department of National Parks in Bngkok Thailand on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010. Thai authorities found the baby tiger cub that had been drugged and hidden among stuffed toy tigers in the suitcase of a woman flying from Bangkok to Iran, an official and a wildlife protection group said Friday.

Authorities say a Thai woman has been arrested after a baby tiger cub that had been drugged and hidden among stuffed toy tigers was found in her luggage.

Police say the woman, flying from Bangkok to Iran, had checked-in for her flight but her oversized bag was sent for an X-ray which showed what appeared to be a live animal inside.

Police say the woman was arrested before boarding her Sunday flight and the cub was sent to a wildlife conservation center where it is recovering from its trip.

The woman denied the luggage with the cub belonged to her and said another passenger had asked her to carry it.

The cub could have fetched about $3,200 on the black market in Iran, where it is popular to have exotic pets.

Wildlife experts say the number of tigers in Asia have plummeted over the years due mainly to habitat loss and poachers.

Hopefully the cub, Is old enough to survive in a zoo or an animal sanctuary without His or Her Mother, Cute cub, The cubs paws are already almost as big as a typical humans hands are.

A good zoo keeper can raise a baby animal from just a few hours old in most cases. They hope not to need to do this of course.

Still He or She is cute at that age.

Which is part of the problem. They are cute at that age and become hard to handle in a couple of years. So someone gets a cute tiger kitten for the family forgetting that it will become a full grown tiger in the not too distant future.

I have run into that problem with large pythons. I used to run a state licensed reptile rescue, and often someone would tell us that their Burmese Python got to big. Of course it got to big. They grow from 20 to 27 feet long, and can weigh several hundred pounds. People seldom did the research up front, and ended up with a problem. I can't even think of the number of iguanas people were trying to put into rescue. They were surprised when the cute little green lizard almost took their face off.
