Good to see you Richard! I'm headed to bed early. I've got to get up at 6AM to take my kid into Pennsylvania for a backpacking trip so goodnight to all, and to all a goodnight!

I'm not sure that last bit is true. I have problems here in Canada because I have no credit history at all.

I think it is very true in Canada. Both my kids got credit cards in high school, with VERY STRICT limits (the bank and their parents). Balances were always paid off every month. As a result, when my daughter went for a car loan after she graduated the bank financed 100 % and asked why she didn't buy a bigger car. This was two weeks before she started her job, but she had a letter of offer and several years good credit record. We didn't have to co-sign. Friends of hers with no history had to wait, or get mommy and daddy to co-sign their first car loans.

I've worked with a few UK immigrants who had the same problem, none of their credit history (good or bad) followed from the UK. They got a bank credit card, very restricted, paid off the few dollars a month they were allowed, and within 6 months were good for loans and mortgages. You just use the card for stuff you were going to buy anyway, no need to actually go into debt.

And that's something I could not do. So I called the lady at the USDA who was doing My paperwork and who wanted Me to spend $28 on a credit report and score, Cause the USDA had already done so and come up with what I had already, Nothing. Their Biased as far as I'm concerned, I have an obligation here and It's like the space rent doesn't count, alternate credit history, too confusing, We don't want to do that, I was told. So since I feel they were only going to turn Me down after they made Me spend $29.64 on a credit report and score which I have here from two of the 3 credit bureaus, then Why should I bother being humiliated by a biased agency. The extra $1.64 is for a postal money order, an envelope & postage.

Since this is a federal agency, I decided to call one of My elected officials, namely Senator Diane Feinsteins office in San Diego CA, They said I should download and fill out a casework form and send It in, They'll then do some work to help. So I'll print out the pdf and fill out the form, then mail It on the 1st of September or maybe earlier as I do have some money still that could be used for an envelope and postage.

This is quite a difficult subject area. The finance industry works upon the premise, that statistics say that anyone who has had payment problems in the past, however long ago, is more likely to have them again, than anybody that never has.

They say, we are not lending you OUR money, we are lending you our investors/shareholders money, therefore we have a duty of care to be careful. But at the same time if they didn't lend any money, they wouldn't be making any profit. It's all about calculation of risk, and using credit profiles.

Did you know that someone who has never had a loan in their life, has a lower credit rating than someone who successfully paid one off without any arrears. It's all about financial street cred, and it's a minefield.

I'm not sure that last bit is true. I have problems here in Canada because I have no credit history at all. Like Vic, they wanted me to take a secured credit card. It might be something I consider one day, but I'd rather not at the moment.

I have found the UK credit system to be very, very forgiving. When me and the ex broke up he left me with 40K of unsecured debts (bless him) which I had no hope of paying off. I guess it has all dropped off my credit history now as my bank offered me a 2k overdraft. Personally I think they are crazy and told them so at the time :D
