Thank you so much to Steve and Thomas for the additional funds. So far you all have contributed $1,100 towards the needed RAM and of course the $7,000 towards the new server.

Well Uli the Ram money I picked back up post Raccoon attack (inside joke) but Hopefully I can provide some assistance soon. I did leave a small amount for a non-controlled purpose with someone that might be able to accomplish that purpose.. But it was not an additional seti donation. Just got the 1K to SETI.

So if the 1K arrived safely and it was not a drunken hallucenation.. it is all good.

Finally back to my little corner of the world.. Whee I have working computers(forgot to pack my mouse, so between the oopsie double posts, 1 bar signal, etc... it was almost no computer for me)

I will let everything shake itself out a bit.. including me. It was a great trip, and I like to think I left with a better understanding of some things. Fair warning.. I have more "thoughts". Some times they are useful.. some times they are not.

If the additional ram(overbuild.. it lasts longer) is not already covered.. I will come up with some. If it is covered.. well the list goes on for what is needed... and I will stay tuned. And soon I will figure out how to get the raccoon pictures I did get up in the cafe.

Hello all - I am going to up the ante for the processors that I will donate to the project since there has been such a dilligent effort to make this the best server that it can be. I have two Intel Xeon X5560's (2.8ghz 4 Cores 8 threads) This would be an upgrade over the E5620's I originally had spoke of.

I'm not using them at the moment but I know that they perform perfect because I had them in my home workstation that also ran S@H 24/7. Never been overclocked or otherwise abused and would be a better place to have them instead of my shelf at that office.

I am the go to girl when it comes to Cash donation issues and pretty clueless about hardware needs. But I can tell you, that the wish list server is about $3,000 under the current donations.
I have secured a promise that pics are will be posted once the new hardware hits the Seti Lab. Maybe the folks will we kind enough to let us know, what else will be needed to totally make this a Seti Volunteer Cruncher/Server etc pp.

Careful .. I told you I get thoughts. Here is another one. I know people
build and retire megacrunchers all the time. And sometimes they get retired
for the simple reason someone built bigger/stronger/faster and they need the room. Potentially if people are willing to donate parts from those.. huge pools of parts could be formed, although most likely GPU heavy. If some of the
server hardware could be reconfigured to run on that it could blow the doors
off of possibility lists. This would not eliminate hardware needs, but it could greatly extend how far cash donations carry.

That is the primary reason that I am now offering the X5560's - I upgraded to the X5670's (Hex-Core 2.93Ghz) in my workstation and now these are just taking up space on the shelf. I would like to see them put to good use and there is no question that they would go a long way toward getting us a very powerful server.

The current server does have 24 processors cores but I believe that they are the Dunnington E7450's http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=36941 and these are decidedly old technology. The socket 604 platform is long since retired and going beyond the current needs of the project. At the time that they were given to the project I'm sure that they we grateful to receive them because they were the pinnicle of performance at the time. However memory transfer was lacking and that is what is bogging down the server at this point.

Even with less true cores and using Hyperthreading the performance of the X5560's will exceed the current server by a factor of 2 at minimum. Memory transfer will be much much faster and that will facilitate increased performance overall. Right off the bat memory performance will go from 533Mhz to 1066Mhz and an integrated controller in the cpu.

I will be happy to part with them if they can be put to good use for the project.

Yes.. I saw the parts department. It looks like my storage. And a "send all your old stuff to:xxxxx" would be a bad idea. Most cases would not fit in
a relay rack format, and 1,001 other things. But some things may.

Todd as was explained to me, at this time they do not have a Serverboard that they would feel confident in dropping the CPU's into and having them work. As has been stated the Intel Machines are mostly "preproduction." They would prefer they find a good home rather than sit on a shelf. Thank You

I know that a few others have offered various items via the PM button. In some cases you may have gotten a response. In some cases it is burried behind what Eric has to do.

Eric stated that after conversation with Matt and Jeff they have a rough wish list. There are events events currently happening which are ahead of finalizing that list.

Pappa, my thought on those CPU's is.. if they are fairly standard then perhaps getting a spare server out of them.. you guys order the board you wish that takes fairly standardized parts.. then open up to the hardware donations to fill it in. A couple of the existing servers are on borrowed time (although some new fans might extend one ;) ) and having one moderately healthy server on the shelf might be an excellent result. dropping newer chips into an older server might not be the best thought to put things like that to use.

So the principle would be buy bare board and appropriate case/power supply. Let us know what parts you want in it, then people can either come up with them out of their own goodie baskets or start sending them, whether new or slightly used.
But JUST the parts you can make good use of.

Excellent Questor! A shinning example of true community leadership for all.

On another note - what is the rough specification for the proposed server? This might be helpful for people to know if they have sources for equipment - this would benefit me at least because I do have access to stuff from Intel that might fit the bill. I already have suggested options for two different pairs of Xeon CPU's but I don't know if these are being considered.

Maybe someone could share their thoughts here so we might be more informed.
