Message 1017418 - Posted: 19 Jul 2010, 0:41:46 UTC - in response to Message 1017411.

I loved Michelob Classic Dark and Henry Weinhards Classic Dark.

I cannot get them any more as Michelob stopped making theirs...

I nearly cried when I couldn't get Michelob Dark anymore. What has gone wrong with your country?

If you can find it, a very good, very local, dark is 10W30, from Neustadt. That our Neustadt, not the old Neustadt. Nouveauneustadt, as it were.

Starting the evening on a nice spanish red to go with dinner, probably move to rye (Walkers, of course) with a Moosehead chaser, and Count Basie played very loud, as the evening unfolds. Here's mud in your eye gang!

I haven't seen Moosehead for a long time. I really liked them.

The story of Moosehead here in Ontario is a precautionary tale for beer lovers everywhere. BEWARE SOCIALISM! BEER AND GOVERNMENTS DON'T MIX!

Way back in the day, the Ontario government (like most Canadian provincial governments) thought booze was evil, but loved the tax revenue. To keep things under control, retail beer sales were only possible through a legalized monopoly called The Beer Store. It was originally founded and funded by the Big Four breweries in Ontario - Molsen, Labatts, Carling and O'Keefes. The Government and the Big Four made sure things ran the way they wanted. THEY ONLY SOLD PRODUCTS FROM THOSE FOUR COMPANIES! When I first moved to Ontario in 1980, I had to drive to New York to buy Moosehead (its only made in New Brunswick, a few provinces to the right.)

Ironically, the Beer Store still exists today. Several long and heated court actions have resulted in them carrying beer from all over, although they regularly run out of anything but the Big Three (Carling and O'Keefe merged). The really ironic part is who owns the Big Three, and thus The Beer Store, today - Belgians, Japanese, and Brazilians.

BEER LOVERS OF THE WORLD - BEWARE!

Sorry, I yell a lot when I drink.

BTW, The Beer Store is really their name, today. A clever ploy to hide the evil government plot behind it all. They started out as Brewers Retail Inc.

Let me know if you need a petition signed, or anything.

On to Hiram Walker's finest, beer to follow.

I suspect they just re-labeled it...

Traurig nicht, fraulein. A Dunkel Weisse is just a slightly darker Weisse beer. More malt, but it is not roasted. The Michelob Dark I grew to love in small bars in California and later in eastern Washington state uses (used?) a dark roasted malt, plus top fermenting, to give a combination of a British style dark flavour without the bitterness of ale, because of the German style top fermenting. (Invented by the Czechs, but don't try to tell this to a German!)

Done with Hiram, just popped the first (and probably last) Moosehead of the evening.

I remember the dark.. prefered the golden. They have an amberbock too.. and a porter... but.. bleah.

If you get a chance, try an Alaskan amber Alt, from the Alaskan Brewing Company.

Tonight just a white russian for me.

Good evening all! I have settled down at my cruncher, "Piggy", and I am waiting till the download limits are released so I can try to fumble through the bandwidth in an attempt to reload for the impending outage. I may as well belly up to the bar at the international pub, and have a few cold beers. Anyone care to join me?

Just back from a good long walk, first in several days due to the heat. A Moosehead would go great right about now.

Excellent! I am planning on being here for a while, but definitly not at the intensity level I sustained Saturday night. That took me most of the day on Sunday to recover!

Having inhaled the Moosehead some time ago, I am now relaxing with a nice Australian Shiraz/Viogner blend, Wakefield 2008. Along with some 5 year old cheddar purchased a few weekends ago in a small town farmers market in eastern Ontario. Heaven must be much like this.

If I had that many beers, I would be feeling poorly for a bit more than a day... :) Sometines it matters less what you drink, only that you have something acceptable. :) I'm going to have to start taking pictures of the exotics. From here on out I will take a picture of every one I drink. Come on Saturday! (There a bit too powerful to drink on a weekday!)

The definition of acceptable depends on the person. I tend towards ales and stouts, but like a good pilsner sometimes.

Yes, well, I know people for whom Bud Light is acceptable. That does not fit my definition of acceptable, but it does theirs (if I have them over, I will have some of it around).
