I would say when you start centering your hardware around SETI, you are on your way to growing a "FARM".. The first high speed GPU,probably not. When you start getting special power supplies, special cooling, multiple GPU's just to process SETI... Yeah I would call that a farm.

Is it dead? When the last one of those pulls the plug I would say yes. Until then, no. Recent problems seem to have kicked up a bit of a dust bowl.. The
time, dedication, money, and electic bills are not properly respected, and probably never will be.

There is no one outside of crunchers and seti staff that would likely care,
and even among those there are a lot of people that give the farmers flack.
The fact they keep going shows great courage, dedication, and perhaps a bit of
mental instability.

Few seem to realize how much of the load they are carrying here. But my completely unmathematical look at the statistics pages show there are fewer
heavy crunchers than most would like to believe.. and the few farmers are doing a lot more to advance the science than most seem to give credit for.

The GPU's are causing a revolution in computing. And the megacrunchers are leading the way. Remember when not so long ago when a nice GPU gave really cool and fast graphics.. and that was about it?

I do hope Phud and others use their farms to heat their homes in the winter.
The summer.. Hmm some might have to switch to solar in the future. ;)

Not over, as such. More like, 'leaner, greener and smarter'. I've found it cheaper, running my fairly modest, but OCd E6550 (2.667 GHZ as opposed to standard 2.33 GHZ), than it was to run my old 3.2GHz Intel P4. In fact, I can run this one, more often than the P4 set-up, and not notice any additional cost. Needless to say, it runs a lot cooler, too. The P4s were pretty good CPUs, but the inherent problems with heat generation, were probably, at least, partly responsible for Intel having a little re-think.

Agricultural farms often produce more than one crop, I see no sense in restricting the definition to S@H only or BOINC only.

My idea would be something like:

1 compute resource = flowerpot
2 -> 4 = planter
5 -> 29 = garden
30+ = farm

I think under Josephs numbers, each box of yours might contain a planter to small garden.

I do know that old 2 core AMD that was about to get powered down of mine... once I got the GPU online went from around 200 rac to around 1600. that old nvidia found new life. That took basically disabling the driver of the onboard video to get boinc to "SEE" the nvidia board.

Neither computer is dedicated seti or boinc though. But I can HEAR the additional strain it puts on them. And hardware expenses just for SETI has been zero so far. Just as well. Times are .. lean.

but even at 1 per core, and 1-4 per GPU for the added output... I think it is in the window box territory. 1 per cpu and 1 per gpu would still make 4... in 2 cases. but again, nothing dedicated.

If you count all cores and GPU's, I would have 22 online right now.

Upgrades me to garden status.

And I suppose those that crunch Seti on work computers could be called 'sharecroppers'...LOL.

I have 17 cores, including GPUs in my smallholding and an RAC of 271K and rising to 290+K.

It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues

Current 0,225 € / ~ 0.28 US$ / kWh in Germany.

Because of this I needed to switch off my ~ 700 W GPU machine (AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE & 4x OCed GTX260-216 (~ 65,000 RAC*)) -> ~ 114,- € / ~ 140.- US$ / month.

The Intel Core2 Duo E7600 & OCed GTX260-216 need ~ 250 W -> ~ 40,50 € / ~ 50.0 US$ / month. So current still affordable. ~ 18,000 RAC*.

If my earnings increase, maybe will switch on again the GPU machine.

Here is another BOINC crunching colleague with 3 rigs totalling 12 cores, including GPUs, with an RAC of over 447K. Again just over a plant pot. Indeed many over in these other projects run about the same number of cores/GPUs (say 15 to 25) and deliver RACs between 1.5 million and 1.7 million. I wish I had that power, and power bill (I wish I could afford them).

Let's just remember that my 100k is Seti only.....
(No offense to 'other' projects...LOL).

None are taken, to the Xtreme or otherwise. Only 14 including the gpus for here, If I went all single pcb on the 295 cards, It would be 16 though and might be closer to MS, But I'd have to get a 1200w-1250w psu instead of a 950w psu.

Edit: So mine's a Garden no matter what, But a fast one in any case.
