I speak Double Dutch and fluent rubbish ;-) When I drink a double Scotch I usually stop talking fluently in any language very quickly but you can bet we have a cool conversation!! Sunday evening a big party is planned, whatever the result/outcome. Heineken beer will flow so we stay on topic!! None of the finalists have succeeded as World Champion so far....now it is time for Spain to reach the skies. ¡Arriba España! |

Paul the 'Psychic' octopus predicts Spain to win World Cup The public relations manager of the Zoo had a very good idea towards publicity and merchandising! Now all the world knows about the german city and its zoo. Very clever! It is said that the performances of the spanish national football team will increase and improve the economy over here: people are more excited and happy so they spend more time and money being positive with new prospective benefits ahead instead of staying at home and worrying about the future. I think I will include some german beer as well, after all, they still brew quite good beer and it will taste great this time! Cheers, my friends! |

According to Wiki there are 11 official languages in South Africa, plus a number of non official ones. That's right, Tullio, and they are English, Afrikaans (the two I can speak), isiZulu, isiXhosa, Northern Sotho, Setswana, Sesotho, Xitsonga, siSwati, Tshivenḓa and isiNdebele. Interestingly, the unofficial ones include Fanagalo, which is a pidgin that is used as a lingua franca in the mining industry. Nine of the official languages are indigenous. Of these, isiZulu is the most common home language, while English ranks about sixth. However, English is very widely understood, particularly in urban areas. The roots of Afrikaans lie in Dutch, although the closest analogue is Flemish (Belgian Dutch). It is also widely understood (and spoken) in certain geographical regions. Language aside, the World Cup in South Africa has been a tremendous success. Prior to the event, there was much scepticism (particularly in parts of Europe!) about South Africa's ability to host the biggest individual sports event on Earth. The vibe (in South Africa we talk about "gees", an Afrikaans word in which the "g" is pronounced like the "ch" in loch) has been fantastic, and the visiting football fans have enjoyed the experience tremendously. I live in Johannesburg, about 20 km away from Soccer City, where the Final will be played on Sunday. Like Paul the octopus, my allegiance for this match lies with Spain! |

Years ago I had read a beautiful novel about South Africa, "Cry, the beloved country", by Alan Paton. Is it still remembered? Tullio |

Yes, it is. (I have it on my bookshelf.) He wrote several books, of which this is the most well-known. He was a remarkable man. |

It was an exciting game and a sweet goal. If I were that referee, I'd avoid any vacations in Holland for the rest of my life. I do not fight fascists because I think I can win. I fight them because they are fascists. Chris Hedges A riot is the language of the unheard. -Martin Luther King, Jr. |
