guess who came back two days ago and read luckily about the new weekly outage, and forgot to change cache from one day to at least five?
yep.

I came back from a week vacation and didn't see the message till after the server went down on tuesday. I had less than half a days work when I should have had a full day and I am now on empty. I shut down Boinc when I am on vacation so the UPS will keep the system up longer if the power fails. Oh my aching RAC. At least World Community Grid is still up.

Ran my cache down to get rid of all the vlar's that needed to be done on CPU. Set to 'Allow new tasks' once the system was almost clear and have managed to snag ONE WHOLE GPU unit since. That took a whole 9 minutes to run, and I've been without work on this machine since...

Other machine has got work, but I'm beginning to think Seti doesn't want/need my help any more...

Never crunched anything else, and not sure I wanna start.

Bit pissed off with it...

Giz.

Seti needs YOU....and me, and everybody else.
Let's just wait and see what happens when they turn the spigot back on Friday.
If certain issues have not been addressed, I'll be right here commenting about it.

But I am not about to give up.

Yes it is....

Which brings up an interesting question......

Has the Boinc version unleashed upon Seti been released for updating by other Boinc projects? And if so, has it caused the gnashing of teeth elsewhere too?

Or was it just foisted upon us here until it works correctly?

Perhaps. I used to often have 15 to 20 MilkyWay WUs at a time in my queue, and often downloaded a dozen or more at a time on my daily update request. But recently got a message like "maximum of 12 tasks allowed", and then received 2 new WUs. Now I have 2 to 4 MW max in my queue at any one time, get a new one or two when I complete and upload one or two (this happens several times a day, all by itself). Just like SETI has been doing to me recently.

No gnashing of teeth here, or in their Forums.

I would think that perhaps Joe or Richard might know for sure how the Boinc update process works for other projects and whether in fact this code has gotten out to them. Hopefully somebody that knows for sure will chime in soon.

I haven't had time the last few days to keep up, and I certainly know far less than Joe about how all this is supposed to work. But I do observe from the outside, and try to make sense of what I see.

There are two versions of the BOINC server code available for projects to use:

1) "Server Stable" - supposedly tested, reliable, ready to use. This is essentially the state of play as at 04 November 2009 (almost eight months ago), plus two bugfixes.

2) "Trunk", which where every loony toon gets thrown. Some of the typos are so obvious even I can spot them! There have been almost 2,000 changes to the 'trunk' code since the last 'server stable' copy was made - although that figure will include client-only, website. translations, and all sorts of other changes.

The trouble is that projects who want to use recent innovations like GPUs probably can't make do with the elderly 'server stable': they will have to use some or all of 'trunk'.

Big, well-resourced projects like Einstein - who have updated their code within the last month - can afford to examine the source and pick and choose what they want. As Jorden told us in another forum, they have taken most of the nice website goodies, but left behind all the 'CreditNew' code (and they had a whole spare server to set it up and test on, complete with a temporary copy of their entire BOINC database). Other projects like CPDN take everything that is on offer at 'update day', spend ages customising it to suit their house style, and then find that they've picked up some slack code as well as the good stuff they wanted. And yet others, like AQUA, just grab a job lot and run it 'as is', warts and all.

And some projects... LHC being the prime example, haven't updated their code for so long they still have the \\' bug in their forum. It\\'s a pain to read. Can\\'t even set an avitar.

Milkyway has it set so you can have 6 WU per CPU core, this is done to relieve the stress on the server. My Quad can have 24 WU at a time, an I7 with hyperthreading can have 48 (that is also the max).

1. Is this recent? A few weeks ago I often had 15 to 20 WUs on my 2 core machine.

2. Maybe S@H should try this to relive the stress on their servers.

Amazing how many people this outage brought out of lurking mode. Seems in the news thread there are lots of people with a post or 2.....

The 6 unit per core limit is in place at least since I started using my GPU for MilkyWay and that was 18 months ago.
A side effect is that every finished unit is reported immediately by Boinc to keep the buffer filled and I'm not sure whether that would help relieving the stress on the S@h servers...

Everyone has to start somewhare. Those of you who have been posting nonstop for years, at one time were posting virgins. There was something that caught your fancy and caused you to write your very first post. Most people prefer to keep their thoughts private most of the time.
